Mairie Saint-Sauveur

Saint-Sauveur is a commune in the French department of Haute-Saône in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté . It is the capital of the canton of Saint-Sauveur in the Lure arrondissement .

geography

Saint-Sauveur is located at an altitude of 283 m above sea level, one and a half kilometers south of Luxeuil-les-Bains and about 27 kilometers northeast of the city of Vesoul (as the crow flies). The village extends in the northern part of the department, in the Luxeuil plain, on the southern bank of the Breuchin opposite Luxeuil-les-Bains.

The area of the 12.02 km² large municipal area includes a section of the Luxeuil plain. The main part of the area is taken up by this alluvial plain , which averages 280 m. The most important flowing water is the Breuchin, which flows with numerous windings through a lowland west to the Lanterne and marks the northern boundary. From the course of the river, the municipal area extends southward over the plain to the lowland of the Ruisseau du Vay de Brest , another right tributary of the Lanterne.

Extensive forests adjoin the village to the east and south-east. In the east these are the Vaivre and the Bois d'Amont , in the southeast the Vay de Brest , in which the source Saint-Vaudre is located. At 304 m, the highest point in Saint-Sauveur is reached on a hill in the Bois d'Amont . In these forest areas there are numerous ponds, some of natural origin, some dammed and used for fish farming.

Neighboring municipalities of Saint-Sauveur are Luxeuil-les-Bains and Froideconche in the north, Esboz-Brest in the east, La Chapelle-lès-Luxeuil in the south and Baudoncourt and Breuches in the west.

history

Saint-Sauveur was first mentioned in 1195 under the name Sanctus Salvator . The spellings Saint Savor (1255), Saint Salvour (1290), Saint Salveur (1477) and Saint Saulveur (1535) have survived from a later period . The current place name has been documented since 1680. In the Middle Ages, Saint-Sauveur was part of the Free County of Burgundy and in that part of the Bailliage d'Amont . The abbots of the Luxeuil monastery held local rule since 1255 . However, the village church was under the care of the Chapter Saint-Jean of Besançon, which led to numerous conflicts with the Luxeuil monastery. Together with Franche-Comté , the village finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678.

During the First World War, the military airfield of Luxeuil was built on the municipality southwest of the village. In 1985, Saint-Sauveur became the capital of the newly founded canton of the same name. Today, Saint-Sauveur is a member of the Communauté de communes du Pays de Luxeuil, comprising 13 localities .

Economy and Infrastructure

For a long time, Saint-Sauveur was primarily a village characterized by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding), forestry and fish farming. The place experienced an economic boom after the construction of the Luxeuil-Saint-Sauveur military airfield (after 1916), which is now equipped with nuclear weapons. In the meantime, Saint-Sauveur has developed into a commercial location in the Luxeuil agglomeration. There are various small and medium-sized businesses, including metal processing companies (bronze foundries), wood processing, precision mechanics and a distribution center for frozen products. In the last few decades the village has also turned into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who go to work in the other larger towns in the Luxeuil region.

The village is well developed in terms of traffic. It is on the main road N57 , which leads from Vesoul via Luxeuil-les-Bains to Remiremont . The town center is relieved of through traffic by a four-lane bypass road. Further road connections exist with Lure , Melisey , Raddon-et-Chapendu and Breuches . The railway line from Lure to Épinal runs through Saint-Sauveur . The nearest train station is in Luxeuil-les-Bains.
