Mairie Fontaine-lès-Luxeuil

Fontaine-lès-Luxeuil is a commune in the French department of Haute-Saône in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Fontaine-lès-Luxeuil is located at an altitude of 263 m above sea level, six kilometers northwest of Luxeuil-les-Bains and about 30 kilometers north-northeast of the city of Vesoul (as the crow flies). The village extends in the northern part of the department, on the southern edge of the plain of Saint-Loup-sur-Semouse, on the Rôge , on the edge of the western foothills of the Vosges .

The area of the municipality of 27.73 km² covers a section of the plain of Saint-Loup-sur-Semouse. From northeast to southwest, the area is crossed by the alluvial valley of the Rôge, which provides drainage to the lantern . The lowland is on average 260 m and has a maximum width of one kilometer. At Fontaine-lès-Luxeuil, the Rôge takes on the Ruisseau de Germonvaux from the north . In the very south-west, Fontaine-lès-Luxeuil has a share in the elongated Étang du Beuchot , to which the Rôge is dammed up here.

To the north of the Rôge valley, the municipal area extends over the plain, which is partly used for agriculture and partly covered by extensive forests ( La Petite Gabiotte ), to the course of the Combeauté . This marks the northern boundary. To the west, the area extends into the forests of the Bois de la Reine (up to 335 m). South of the Rôge, a step leads to the adjacent ridge, which is almost entirely wooded. The slope is subdivided by the erosion channels of several short side streams of the Rôge. The southern border runs on the broad ridge of the Forêt des Sept-Chevaux and the communal forest of Luxeuil-les-Bains. At 397 m in the far east, on the ascent to the plateau of Saint-Valbert, the highest point of Fontaine-lès-Luxeuil is reached.

From a geological and tectonic point of view, the heights south of the Rôge consist mainly of red sandstone from the Lower Triassic . In some places the crystalline bedrock is also exposed. The elevations north of the Rôge are made up of alternating layers of calcareous and sandy-marl sediments, which were deposited during the Lias (Lower Jurassic).

Fontaine-lès-Luxeuil includes the settlements of Les Baraques-Chardin (259 m) on the southern edge of the Combeauté valley and La Motte (280 m) in the Rôge valley. Neighboring municipalities of Fontaine-lès-Luxeuil are

history

The municipality of Fontaine-lès-Luxeuil was settled in prehistoric times. The earliest evidence of man's presence comes from the Paleolithic . Several finds indicate that the area was also inhabited during the Gallo-Roman period.

Fontaine's origins go back to around the year 600. Saint Columban founded a priory here that was dependent on the Luxeuil monastery . The numerous existing sources gave the place the name Fontanas . In the Middle Ages Fontaine belonged to the Free County of Burgundy and in it to the area of the Bailliage d'Amont . Local rule was held by the Lords of Faucogney. Together with Franche-Comté , the village finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. The priory was abolished in the course of the French Revolution and the property was transferred to the state.

At the end of the 18th century, thanks to the abundant hydropower, Fontaine developed into an industrial and commercial location with mills, paper mills, brickworks, blast furnaces and pottery. Red sandstone was also mined here. With the opening of the railway line from Lure via Luxeuil to Épinal , Fontaine-lès-Luxeuil was connected to the French railway network in the second half of the 19th century.

Economy and Infrastructure

Fontaine-lès-Luxeuil developed early on into an industrial and commercial location. Today there are various small and medium-sized businesses, including a cardboard factory, a light metal foundry (among other things in the buildings of the former priory) and wood processing and precision engineering companies.
