The area of the 12.88 km² municipal area includes a section of the gently undulating landscape near Villersexel. The central part of the area is occupied by the Plateau of Athesans, which lies at an average of 300 m and whose subsoil consists of sandy-marly layers of the Lias . It consists of arable and meadow land, but also shows some larger forest areas. The plateau is drained by the Rognon, which takes in various short side streams here. It flows south through a wide valley to the Scey . The two ponds Étang de la Mouillère and Étang Lombard also belong to the municipality . To the west, the area goes back to the little valley of the Ruisseau Basse-Fontaine , another tributary of Scey.

To the east of the Rognon Valley, the terrain gradually rises. Here is the vast wooded area of the Bois de Saint-Georges , which covers the westernmost foothills of the hills and plateaus of the Bois de Granges. It is mainly made up of red sandstone . At 367 m, the highest point in Athesans-Étroitefontaine is reached in the Bois de Saint-Georges.

The community consists of three districts:

  • Athesans (300 m) on the plateau west of the Rognon valley
  • Étroitefontaine (285 m) on the plateau north of the Scey valley plain
  • Saint-Georges (278 m), hamlet in the Rognon valley on the western edge of the Bois de Saint-Georges

history

Athesans is first mentioned in a document in 1174 under the name Athesun . Over time, the spellings Athesans (1431), Atessan (1696), Athesans-Saint-Georges (1789) and Athesans-les-Forges (1793) appeared. The municipality was already inhabited at the time of the Merovingians , as evidenced by the discovery of various graves near Saint-Georges in the 19th century. From the 12th century Athesans formed its own rule. Together with Franche-Comté , the village finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678.

In 1717, the Perreney de Baleure family founded the Saint-Georges ironworks. For a long time it formed the economic basis for the population in the area and was nationalized after the French Revolution. The last blast furnace ceased operations in 1865. Furthermore, iron ore and salt were mined in the area of Athesans and red sandstone in the Bois de Saint-Georges. Athesans and Saint-Georges have formed one community since the time of the French Revolution. At the end of 1972, Athesans merged with Étroitefontaine, which then had around 40 residents, to form the twin municipality of Athesans-Étroitefontaine. Since 2000, Athesans-Étroitefontaine has been a member of the community association Communauté de communes du Pays de Villersexel, which comprises 33 localities .

Attractions

The Saint-Servais church in Athesans was built in the 19th century in the neo-Gothic style and has one of the oldest bells in the Haute-Saône (around 1500). The Château de Athesans dates from the 18th century, that of Saint-Georges, which belonged to the owner of the ironworks, from the 19th century. There is a 19th century fountain in Étroitefontaine.
