geography

Conflans-sur-Lanterne is at an altitude of 232 m above sea level, 13 kilometers west of Luxeuil-les-Bains and about 22 kilometers north of the city of Vesoul (as the crow flies). The village extends in the northern part of the department, in the wide valley floor at the confluence of the Sémouse and Lanterne rivers .

The area of the 13.09 km² municipal area includes a section of the gently undulating landscape in the area of the lantern. From east to west, the area is crossed by the Lanterne alluvial valley , which drains the Saône . In the valley floodplain, the river draws numerous bends and has near-natural banks. The valley level lies at an average of 228 m and has a maximum width of 4 kilometers. It is partly used for agriculture, partly with alluvial forest. The Semouse flows west of the village, which has also created a wide valley and marks the northern border in sections. From the south, the Ruisseau des Chaufours and the Ruisseau de la Prairie reach the Lanterne in the Conflans area .

The lowlands of Lanterne and Semouse are flanked by hills, which consist of alternating layers of sandy-marl and calcareous sediments, which were deposited during the Lias ( Lower Jurassic ). In the northwest the municipal area extends to the Bois des Ardennes , in the east to the Bois du Chanoi (276 m). The southern boundary runs in the Bois Lajus . In the very south-east is the height of the Bois de Conflans , at which the highest point of Conflans-sur-Lanterne is reached at 298 m. This elevation is made of red sandstone from the Lower Triassic .

Neighboring municipalities of Conflans-sur-Lanterne are Dampierre-lès-Conflans in the north, Briaucourt in the east, Velorcey , Meurcourt and Équevilley in the south and Mersuay , Bourguignon-lès-Conflans and Bassigney in the west.

history

Conflans is first mentioned in a document in 1241. In the Middle Ages, the village belonged to the Free County of Burgundy and in it to the area of the Bailliage d'Amont . The monastery of Luxeuil held local rule . During this time, the place developed into a small, fortified market town. During the Thirty Years War, Conflans was ambushed and burned down by Swedish troops in 1636. A convent was founded here in the 17th century. Together with Franche-Comté , the place finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678. Towards the end of the 19th century, the village was connected to the French rail network with the opening of the railway line from Faverney to Aillevillers . The line has since been discontinued. Conflans was officially renamed Conflans-sur-Lanterne in 1962 to avoid confusion with other communities of the same name.
