Échenans-sous-Mont-Vaudois is a commune in the French department of Haute-Saône in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

Échenans-sous-Mont-Vaudois is located at an altitude of 378 m above sea level, four kilometers northeast of Héricourt and about eight kilometers southwest of the city of Belfort (as the crow flies). The village extends to the west of the Burgundian Gate , on a plateau at the north foot of Mont Vaudois.

The area of ​​the 5.44 km² municipal area includes a section in the area of ​​the Burgundian Gate. The northern part of the area forms a plateau, which lies at about 370 m and is made up of marly sediments of the Lias ( Lower Jurassic ) and Triassic . It is drained by the Ruisseau d'Échenans to the west to the Lizaine . The plateau is mainly used for agriculture, but also shows some forest areas. South of the village, the slope rises steeply to Mont Vaudois, which consists of a resistant limestone layer from the middle Jurassic period . At 530 m, the highest point in Échenans-sous-Mont-Vaudois is reached on this ridge. To the east, the community area extends over the lowland of another tributary of the Lizaine to the summit of the Bois du Mont (440 m).

Neighboring municipalities of Échenans-sous-Mont-Vaudois are Mandrevillars and Buc in the north, Urcerey and Banvillars in the east, Brevilliers and Héricourt in the south and Luze and Chagey in the west.

history

The municipality of Échenans-sous-Mont-Vaudois was already inhabited in prehistoric times, as evidenced by traces of a Neolithic settlement on Mont Vaudois. Échenans is mentioned for the first time in 1150. It initially belonged to the Belchamp monastery and then came under the rule of Héricourt. The Reformation was introduced around 1565 . In 1748 the village, which until then had been under the sovereignty of the Principality of Württemberg-Mömpelgard (Montbéliard) , finally came under contract to the French crown. To avoid confusion with the nearby village of Échenans in the Doubs department, the municipality was officially renamed Échenans-sous-Mont-Vaudois in 1985. Since 2001, Échenans-sous-Mont-Vaudois has been a member of the Pays d'Héricourt, a community of 20 localities .

Attractions

The Lutheran church was built in 1584 and remodeled in the 19th century. The parish belongs to the Lutheran parish association Le Mont Vaudois with eleven others .

With 522 inhabitants (January 1, 2017), Échenans-sous-Mont-Vaudois is one of the small communes of the Haute-Saône department. After the population in the first half of the 20th century was mostly in the range between 140 and 170 people, there has been strong population growth since the beginning of the 1970s. Since then, the population has increased almost fivefold.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Échenans-sous-Mont-Vaudois was mainly a village characterized by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding) and forestry. In addition, there are now some local small businesses. In the meantime, the village has also turned into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who do their work in Héricourt and the agglomerations of Belfort and Montbéliard .

The village is located away from the major thoroughfares on a department road that leads from Brevilliers to Châlonvillars . The closest connection to the A36 motorway is around eight kilometers away. Another road connection exists with Luze.
