Anjeux is a municipality in the French department of Haute-Saône in the region Bourgogne Franche-Comté .

geography

Anjeux is located at an altitude of 242 m above sea level, five kilometers west of Saint-Loup-sur-Semouse and about 30 kilometers north of the city of Vesoul (as the crow flies). The village extends in the far north of the department, in the basin of the Ruisseau le Chanois west of the lowlands of the Planey , on the edge of the plateau of the Vôge .

The area of the 8.71 km² municipal area includes a section in the gently undulating landscape on the edge of the Vôge. The eastern part of the municipality is occupied by the alluvial lowland of the Planey, which rises from a karst spring and provides drainage to the south via the Semouse to the Lanterne . The valley level is on average 235 m and has a width of about one kilometer. In the area of Anjeux, the Planey takes on the Dorgeon and Ruisseau le Chanois tributaries from the right . The eastern boundary marks the height of the forest of the Bois du Fays , at which the highest point of Anjeux is reached at 303 m. It forms the watershed to the Semouse valley.

To the northwest, the municipal area extends into the basin of the Ruisseau le Chanois and the adjacent plateaus ( Haut de Calenne and Charmot , around 260 m). Agricultural use prevails here. The northern boundary runs in the La Levue forest . In geological and tectonic terms, the main part of the municipal area consists of shell limestone from the Middle Triassic . In some places sandy-marl and calcareous sediments are exposed, which were deposited during the Lias ( Lower Jurassic ).

Neighboring municipalities of Anjeux are Dampvalley-Saint-Pancras and Cuve in the north, Bouligney and Saint-Loup-sur-Semouse in the east, La Pisseure , Plainemont and Jasney in the south and Girefontaine in the west.

history

Remains of a Roman traffic route testify to an early inspection and settlement of the area. In the Middle Ages, Anjeux belonged to the Free County of Burgundy and in that part of the Bailliage d'Amont . Anjeux formed the center of its own rule, which has been documented since 1271 and was later partly dependent on the Lords of Faucogney and partly on the Luxeuil monastery . Witch trials took place here several times in the 16th century. Together with Franche-Comté, the place finally came to France with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678.

Saint-Remi church
Lavoir Anjeux

The village church of Saint-Remi of Anjeux was built in the 15th and 16th centuries in the Gothic Flamboyant style and is classified as a monument historique . It has a large rectangular tower, a nave with three bays, a choir with two bays and a flat choir head. The two side chapels, which form a false transept, were added in 1843. The facade is decorated with a three-headed mask, a symbol for the past, present and future. The lavoir , which once served as a wash house and cattle trough, dates back to the 19th century. Ruins of the former manor house on the La Sarrasinière corridor have been preserved. The Gouffre du Planey (karst spring of the Vaucluse type) is one of the natural attractions.

With 144 inhabitants (January 1, 2017), Anjeux is one of the small communities in the Haute-Saône department. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (417 people were still counted in 1886), only slight fluctuations have been recorded since the early 1960s.

Economy and Infrastructure

Until well into the 20th century, Anjeux was a village dominated by agriculture (arable farming, fruit growing and cattle breeding) and forestry. The foundry on Planey ceased operations in the early 20th century. Today there are some local small businesses, including a cheese dairy. In the last few decades the village has transformed into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who work in the larger towns in the area.

The village is located off the major thoroughfares on a department road that leads from Cuve to Conflans-sur-Lanterne . There are other road links with Jasney, Bouligney and Ainvelle.
