Edzard Ferdinand (* July 12, 1636 in Aurich ; † January 1, 1668 in Norden ) from the house of Cirksena is considered the "Count of the North".

Life

Edzard Ferdinand was the youngest son of Count Ulrich II of East Friesland and Juliane , Countess of Hesse, and belonged to the Cirksena family in East Friesland. After the death of his father in 1648 under the tutelage of his mother, he attended the knight academies in Breda and Tübingen from the age of 14 . As part of his training, he made extensive trips to France, Switzerland, Italy and England. In 1658 he returned to Aurich to the court of his eldest brother, Count Enno Ludwig . After his unexpected death in March 1660, Edzard Ferdinand demanded that his second oldest brother, Georg Christian, divide the rulership, but could not get his way. His demand for a payment of his inheritance was also in the room. On January 18, 1661, an agreement was reached between the brothers. Edzard Ferdinand renounced a co-government in exchange for an annual appanage and retired with a small court to the north, where he resided as Count von Norden.

family

On July 22nd, 1665 he married Anna Dorothea von Criechingen and Püttingen, with whom he had two sons.

  • Edzard Eberhard Wilhelm (* June 28, 1666, † June 25, 1707) ⚭ 1701 (morning) Sophia Maria Föltin
  • Friedrich Ulrich (born December 31, 1667, † March 13, 1710), Dutch Lieutenant General ⚭ 1709 Marie Charlotte of East Friesland (born April 10, 1689; † December 9, 1761)

The sudden death of Georg Christian in early June 1665 revived the question of government power. Since the widow Christine Charlotte von Württemberg was just pregnant, Edzard Ferdinand took over the interim government until the birth of the new, future Prince Christian Eberhard .

Together with the princely widow and taking responsibility for the task, Edzard Ferdinand participated in a guardianship government for the future prince, but died two and a half years later, one day after the birth of his younger son.
