Juliane of Hessen-Darmstadt
Juliane von Hessen-Darmstadt (born April 14, 1606 in Darmstadt ; † January 15, 1659 in Westerhof ) was the wife of Count Ulrich II. Countess of East Frisia and, after his death, was the guardian of the government for her son Enno Ludwig from 1648 to 1651 .
Life
Her parents were Ludwig V of Hessen-Darmstadt and Magdalena of Brandenburg , daughter of Elector Johann Georg von Brandenburg .
On March 5, 1631 Juliane came from Hessen-Darmstadt to East Friesland and married the count on the same day. In the following years she gave birth to three sons Enno Ludwig, Georg Christian and Edzard Ferdinand. Ulrich had the summer palace Sandhorst built for his wife during the turmoil of the Thirty Years War , which was completed shortly before his death in 1648. During this time, East Frisia suffered great hardship from foreign occupiers.
After Ulrich's death in 1648, Juliane nominally took over the guardianship of the underage sons and the affairs of government, but she gave in to decadence , sent the sons who were more of a hindrance to her abroad and had the severely damaged county run by her favorites - and this more badly than Law. This led to even more problems with the East Frisian estates than was already the case in the county.
Among these favorites are above all the privy councilor Johann von Marenholtz and his wife Elisabeth Ungnad Weissenwolf zu Sonneck , who was a lady-in-waiting of Julius and mother of the Oldenburg governor Anton I of Aldenburg . Juliane is said to have had a relationship with Privy Councilor Marenholtz, which later became his undoing. Juliane meanwhile moved the farm from Aurich to Sandhorst in order to be able to indulge in the sweet life undisturbed. Since the Marenholtz couple did too bad, many nobles urged young Enno Ludwig to return to East Frisia. This had been declared by the emperor to be of legal age ahead of time and in May 1651 he forced his mother Juliane out of the government in a coup . She was sent to the widow's residence in Berum Castle . Johann von Marenholtz was executed in Wittmund on July 21, 1651 after a show trial .
In 1654 Juliane bought Gut Westerhof near Osterode am Harz , where she died in 1659.
