Monts Faucilles

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Monts Faucilles (French: faucille = sickle ) denotes a mountain range in northeastern France . It extends from the southeast of the Haute-Marne department to the southwest of the Vosges department in the Grand Est region .

The ridge forms the continuation of the European main watershed from the South Vosges over the sandstone plateau Vôge on the edge of the Lorraine plateau ( Plaine Lorraine ) west to the plateau of Langres . The chain of elevations is not recognizable as a closed mountain range, rather it consists of a series of mountains rising from the high plateau such as the 497 m high Côte de Hautmont or the 487 m high Côte des Noues . The highest point of the Monts Faucilles is the Mont des Fourches two kilometers east of Lamarche , which reaches 501 meters above sea level.

At the ridge of Monts Faucilles, which is mainly made of limestone and sandstone, two important European rivers arise with the Meuse and the Saône . The sources of the rivers north of the ridge drain over the Maas and via Madon / Mosel / Rhine to the North Sea , while those south of the ridge flow over the Saône and Rhone to the Mediterranean . The watershed is crossed by the Canal des Vosges .

Along the Monts Faucilles are some well-known thermal baths such as Martigny-les-Bains , Contrexéville , Bourbonne-les-Bains or Vittel .
