Châtenois is a French commune with 1,706 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Vosges department in the Grand Est region (until 2015 Lorraine ). It belongs to the Arrondissement Neufchâteau and the canton Mirecourt (until 2015: canton Châtenois ). The inhabitants are called Castinia .

geography

Châtenois is located about 50 kilometers south-southwest of Nancy . The Vair flows through the municipality . Châtenois is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Courcelles-sous-Châtenois and Balléville in the north, Viocourt in the northeast, Houécourt in the east, La Neuveville-sous-Châtenois in the southeast, Longchamp-sous-Châtenois and Darney-aux-Chênes in the south, Rouves-la -Chétive in the west and south-west and Vouxey and Dolaincourt in the north-west.

The A31 autoroute runs through the municipality .

history

The settlement was already known as Castinetum in Gallo-Roman times. For the Dukes of Lorraine, Châtenois was an important fortress in the Middle Ages.
