geography
course
The river has its source on the eastern slope of the 497 m high Côte de Hautmont in the south of the Vosges department in the municipality of Dombrot-le-Sec . The Côte de Hautmont is a mountain in the Monts Faucilles mountain range , which over its entire length and with heights of up to 500 m above sea level. NHN forms part of the main European watershed . The Vair flows into the Meuse between the municipalities of Greux and Moncel-sur-Vair .
Catchment area
The Meuse basin is very narrow in the Grand Est region , so that only short rivers flow to the Meuse. The valley of the Vair with its tributaries Petit Vair , Vraine and Frezelle is an exception. In the catchment area of the river lies the city of Vittel , which is known for its mineral springs and the large spa park.

Hydrology
At the confluence of the Vair in the Meuse, the mean flow rate (MQ) is 5.15 m³ / s; the catchment area here covers 459.5 km² km².
At the Le Vair à Soulosse-sous-Saint-Élophe gauge, the average annual runoff of the Vair was calculated over a period of 52 years (1969-2000).
The flow rate fluctuates quite strongly over the course of the year. The highest water levels are measured between December and February. The flow rate reaches its peak in February with 10.80 m³ / s. From March onwards the discharge decreases and reaches its lowest level in September with 0.861 m³ / s, after which it increases again from month to month. The annual average value here is 4,920 m³ / s
. Data calculated from the values for the years 1969–2020
