history

Earlier spellings of the place name were Gemnaincourt, Gemenaincourt or Gemelaincourt . It was not until 1857 that the community received its current name. During the Ancien Régime the village belonged to the Mirecourt Bailiwick .

Before the church of St. Maurus was built in 1730, Gemmelaincourt was an ecclesiastical annex to the parish of Saint-Menge. The later separate parish belonged to the diocese of Toul and to the deanery of Porsas. The Remiremont chapter also received a share of the tithe.

Gemmelaincourt Castle - a simple three-story building on a rectangular floor plan with the main facade facing west - was the property of the Leopold Marquis de Hennezel Francogney , who came from a family of glassmakers from the woods around Darney in 1793, at the time of the beginning of the French Revolution Lord of the castle arrested and imprisoned in Mirecourt . Shortly before the scaffold, he managed to escape to Switzerland. He took part in the restoration campaigns and later even became mayor of Gemmelaincourt. From the 19th century to the mid-1980s, the castle served as a rectory. The community took over the building but was unable to finance the repair of the damage. A new owner was less interested in maintaining the castle and sold the chimneys, floor coverings and wooden beams separately. The next owner, the painter and engraver Franck Hommage from Nancy, began renovating the house, but it was partially destroyed in a fire on January 25, 2015. It is currently being examined whether the remains of the castle can be listed as a monument historique .

Economy and Infrastructure

In addition to local small businesses and trade, agriculture still plays an important role in Gemmelaincourt and the surrounding area. Five farms are located in the community (cereal cultivation, dairy farming, horse and cattle breeding). Some residents are commuters to the business parks of Gironcourt-sur-Vraine , Vittel and Mirecourt .

The partly two-lane expressway (D 166) from Épinal via Mirecourt to Neufchâteau runs five kilometers north of Gemmelaincourt. There are also road links to the neighboring municipalities of Saint-vielle, Domjulien and Parey-sous-Montfort.
