Messein is a French commune with 1,863 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Meurthe-et-Moselle department in the Grand Est region (until 2015 Lorraine ). The inhabitants are called Messinois .
geography
The municipality of Messein is eight kilometers south of Nancy on the banks of the Canal des Vosges , which runs parallel to the Moselle , which runs southwards . Two lakes ( le Petit Étang, le Grand Étang ) stretch between the canal and the Moselle and are used for local recreation. In Messein, the Canal de jonction de Nancy branches off from the Canal des Vosges. It leads south around Nancy to the Rhine-Marne Canal .
history
Around 400 BC At the site of today's Messein there was a fortified settlement of the Celtic tribe of the Leuci - the so-called "Camp d'Affrique". Remains of the approximately 800 m long city wall can still be seen today. Later the Gallo-Romans settled here . The name "Messinum" also comes from this period. In the Middle Ages the place gained importance due to iron mines nearby. The area is still characterized by the steel industry today.
