history

Around 400 BC At the site of today's Messein there was a fortified settlement of the Celtic tribe of the Leuci - the so-called "Camp d'Affrique". Remains of the approximately 800 m long city wall can still be seen today. Later the Gallo-Romans settled here . The name "Messinum" also comes from this period. In the Middle Ages the place gained importance due to iron mines nearby. The area is still characterized by the steel industry today.
