It belongs to the Arrondissement of Nancy and is the main town ( chef-lieu ) of the Canton of Jarville-la-Malgrange . The inhabitants are called Jarvilloises .

Jarville-la-Malgrange is surrounded by the neighboring municipalities of Nancy in the north, Tomblaine in the north-east, Laneuveville-devant-Nancy in the east and south-east, Heillecourt in the south and south-west and Vandœuvre-lès-Nancy in the west.
