Maron is a French commune with 831 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Meurthe-et-Moselle department in the Grand Est region (until 2015 Lorraine ). It belongs to the municipality of Moselle et Madon .

geography

Maron lies on the Moselle , which forms the western municipal boundary, and on the Canal des Vosges , which branches off from the canalized Moselle , about 13 kilometers southwest of Nancy . Neighboring communities of Maron are Bois-de-Haye with Velaine-en-Haye in the north, Champigneulles (point of contact) and Laxou in the north-east, Chaligny in the south-east, Sexey-aux-Forges in the south and west and Gondreville in the north-west.

history

The church of Saint-Gengoult of Maron, which is dedicated to Saint Gangolf , was first mentioned in 1226, the village was then called Maioron . The church belonged to the priory of Pont-Saint-Vincent . That church no longer exists, the current church of Maron was built in the 18th century.

economy

The main occupations of the Meulsons, residents of Maron, have been viticulture and fruit growing since the end of the 19th century . In the middle of the 20th century the quarry de la Grande Goutte was operated. It is closed today and is a popular destination for climbers and walkers. Another reason for the community's growth was the Maron Val de Fer iron mine , which operated from 1872 to 1968, and the nearby ironworks in Neuves-Maisons .

Personalities

A bronze plaque marks the spot where the American -French ace Gervais Raoul Lufbery (born March 14, 1885 in Chamalières ; † 19 May 1918 in Maron) crashed in May 1918 to death after his plane in a dogfight during the First World War I had been hit.
