The Basilica Notre-Dame de Sion ( German  Basilica of Our Lady of Sion ) is a Roman Catholic pilgrimage church on the Colline de Sion ( Hill of Sion ) near Saxon-Sion , located in the Saintois natural region south of Nancy in the Grand Est region . The Church of Our Lady of the Diocese of Nancy-Toul was built between the 14th and 19th centuries; it has had the rank of a basilica minor since 1933 and is listed as a monument historique .

history

The pilgrimage destination of the Marian pilgrimage of the Duchy of Lorraine was created as a result of earlier Celtic and Roman places of worship on the hill from the 10th century. The choir of the church was built around 1324-1325, the altar dates from the 15th century. The nave was rebuilt in 1741. The 45 meter high bell tower was built between 1858 and 1869 by the architects François Lamorre and then Léon Vautrin. A 7-meter-high statue of the Virgin Mary from the Tusey foundry in Vaucouleurs was placed on top of this in 1871 . The Marian pilgrimage intensified after the proclamation of the dogma of the Immaculate Conception in 1854, which was overseen by various orders in the neighboring monastery over the years.

After the restorations in 1998, there was a fire in 2003 with the destruction of the four bells, which initiated inclusion in the list of Monuments historique in the same year together with the neighboring monastery. After restoration work, the statue was reassembled on the bell tower. On October 13, 2007, the four new bells were also blessed at the new church consecration.

Memorial site

The church became a memorial for the victims of the Franco-German wars, from which Lorraine was always particularly hard, and for the division of Lorraine in 1871-1918 and 1940-1944. Above the altar of the north aisle, votive tablets for the Mother of God with inscriptions in Lorraine , which deal with the indivisibility of the region:

  • 1873: Ce n'a me po tojo - "It is not forever"; plus a Lorraine cross broken in the middle
  • 1920: Ce n'ato me po tojo - "It wasn't forever"; A golden palm branch was placed over the break of the Lorraine cross
  • 1946: Estour inc po tojo - "Now forever one"

In 1973, on the occasion of a Franco-German commemoration and reconciliation ceremony, the word Réconciliation - "Reconciliation" was added.
