history

The origins and development in Italy and worldwide

The history of the Marcegaglia Group began in 1959 when Steno Marcegaglia († September 10, 2013), then just under thirty years old, took over a craft business together with a partner through the company Marcegaglia-Caraffini di Gazoldo degli Ippoliti (Mantua) Manufactured irrigation pipes and metal rails for roller shutters.

Four years later, the Ipas company was founded in Contino di Volta Mantovana, which manufactured drawn bars from flat and round steel with around ten employees. In Gazoldo degli Ippoliti , where around 30 employees were already involved in the production of open profile parts , the production of the first tubes made of cold-rolled strip steel began. From 1963 the production activities of these small companies were strengthened and expanded through ongoing investments. In 1969 a new rolling mill for the production of cold-rolled strip steel was acquired.

In 1974 the plant in Gazoldo degli Ippoliti built a further 250,000 square meters of production hall. The production range was diversified and expanded with the addition of tubes made of hot-rolled strip steel. In 1978, after the takeover of Laminatoi Meridionali in Arzano (Napoli), the Marcegaglia Group began to advertise troubled production plants that were rehabilitated and made competitive.

In 1982, when the total number of employees had already reached 640, the second most important plant of the group was built in Casalmaggiore and equipped with the technologically modern systems from “Oto Mills” from Boretto (Reggio Emilia). This company, which was taken over with other partners in 1979, subsequently played a key role in the technical innovation of the Marcegaglia Group's production facilities.

In 1983 three other companies were taken over: Lombarda Tubi in Lomagna (Lecco), Saom in Boltiere (Bergamo) and Trisider in Tezze (Vicenza). The total turnover of "Made in Marcegaglia" had risen to 175 million euros in 1983 and over 860 people were employed. The group continued to be personally managed by Steno Marcegaglia, supported by his wife Palmira Bazzani, and later also by the children Antonio and Emma. In 1984 the structure of the group was redesigned based on an internal restructuring plan. The former Metallurgica Marcegaglia, the former Ipas and the former Tubi Acciaio merged in the newly founded company Marcegaglia Spa. Lombarda Tubi took over the former Saom, while Trisider and Oto Mills retained their corporate autonomy in sales and engineering.

In 1985, the Marcegaglia Group expanded its industrial activities by taking over three major companies in the Maraldi Group: Maraldi Company in Ravenna , Forlisider Company in Forlimpopoli (Forlì) and Salpa Company in Cervignano del Friuli (Udine), all specialized in the Manufacture of pipes for water, gas and methane pipes, which were then converted and processed in the new Marcegaglia plants in Forlì, Cervignano and Ravenna.

In 1985, after the takeover of the company Cct in Santo Stefano Ticino (Milan), the company Profilnastro in Dusino San Michele (Asti), which was active in the production of pipes from hot-rolled strip steel, was taken over, which at that time was in the process of legal restructuring . The management of the companies resulting from the reconversion , the control of the group’s interests in non-metallurgical companies, and the management of a significant stock and bond portfolio led to the establishment of a new company in 1987, the Fingem Spa a financial service provider at national and European level.

In 1987 Antonio Marcegaglia joined the company. In 1988, Credit Suisse acquired the island of Albarella on the Adriatic coast and expanded it into a holiday complex.

Antonio Marcegaglia drove the diversification of the group by founding the Bioindustrie Mantovane in 1988, by taking over the companies Oskar in Osteria Grande (Bologna), Nuova Omec, Ennepi in Lugo di Romagna (Ravenna), and Imat in Fontanafredda (Pordenone) , 1989 the CCT in Gallarate (VA) and the Elet.Ca in Capalle (FI) as well as the establishment of Marcegaglia Impianti in Saronno (VA) in 1989. In the same year, shares in Fergallo in Motteggiana (MN), SIM in Sant'Atto (TE) and Elletre in Montebello Vicentino (VI) were acquired. In 1991 the group acquired Resco Tubi in Cusago (Milan) and OMF in Fiume Veneto (PN). In 1994 she acquired the Brollo Profilati company in Desio (Milan), which then moved to the former Breda site at the gates of Milan, to a total area of 80,000 square meters, which was acquired in 1996. In 1995 the company ETA Euro Tubi Acciaio followed in Milan and a stake in the company Allu's in Sesto al Reghena (PN).

The new operating and production constellation made it possible for the group to also be represented in the areas of metal household items as well as electrostatic painting of metals and metal components for the household appliance industry. The metallurgical department was expanded to include the production of thin stainless steel tubes and cold-rolled profiles.

In 1996, the Euro Energy Group was also founded to develop systems for generating energy from renewable energies. In January 1997, Nuova Forsidera was acquired with its plants in Corsico (Milan) and Albignasego (Padua), which specialize in cold rolling, transforming and galvanizing steel. In 1998, “Boiler Expertise” was founded for the planning and manufacture of industrial and heating boilers.

Also in 1998 the group took over the Astra company in Mezzolara di Budrio (BO); In addition, the former Siderplating factory, where sheet metal is manufactured on rolling mills, was taken over under the name of Marcegaglia San Giorgio di Nogaro (Udine). In 1999 the companies Morteo Nord in Pozzolo Formigaro (Alessandria) and Ponteggi Dalmine in Milan were taken over.

This was followed by the takeover of the Pugnochiuso holiday complex in the Apulian foothills of the Gargano in 2001 in the tourism sector . In December 2001, after an investment of around 500 million euros within a few years, a new plant was opened in Ravenna : the second largest Italian industrial complex in the iron and steel sector. In 2002, on the former site of the Belleli company, the second largest production facility in southern Italy, after the one in Potenza, went into operation in Taranto .

In 2003 the area of products for the household appliance industry expanded further with the takeover of BVB in San Lorenzo in Campo (Pesaro). In 2004 the group expanded its activity in the tourism industry by taking over 49% of Sviluppo Italia Turismo together with Banca Intesa and the Ifil group.

In 2007 Antonio Marcegaglia subscribed to the capital of the real estate company Gabetti Property Solutions and expanded his factory in Ravenna with a further investment of 300 million euros. He expanded in the energy sector and tackled the solar power sector with the company he controlled, Arendi , in order to manufacture photovoltaic elements . In addition, he increased his involvement in the tourism industry by taking over the management of the Forte Village resort in Santa Margherita di Pula in Sardinia . A little later the holiday club “Le Tonnare” in Stintino in the province of Sassari was added. In 2007 he also expanded the plant in Boltiere (BG). In 2008 he took over the Castel Monastero hotel complex in Castelnuovo Berardenga (SI) and the “Ex Arsenale” real estate complex on La Maddalena (SS).

In addition, United Stainless Steel was founded near London in Great Britain and shortly afterwards Marcegaglia UK for the production of welded tubes from hot and cold rolled strip; 1997 then Marcegaglia UK in Dudley , West Midlands. In 1991, the group in the United States took over The New Bishop Tube in Philadelphia and in February 1992 the Damascus company in Greenville , two production sites from which the Damascus-Bishop Tube Company, which specializes in stainless steel, emerged.

In 2000 this was taken over by the Earcanal Group from Leioa (Spain). After the joint venture with Arbed, the Marcegaglia Group reached an agreement with the Corus Group in 2004 to jointly manage the facilities of its English steelworks in Teesside for ten years , which means that it can supply at a purchase price of one million tons of slabs per year for the production of coils and sheet metal secured.
