Lufthansa Italia SpA ceased operations in 2011. The information in italics refer to the last status before the end of operation.

Lufthansa Italia SpA was an Italian subsidiary of Deutsche Lufthansa AG based in Milan and based at Milan Malpensa Airport .

history

On February 2, 2009, Deutsche Lufthansa AG and its main company Lufthansa Passage began operating two aircraft from Milan-Malpensa under the brand name Lufthansa Italia . With the new subsidiary, Lufthansa intended to better develop the lucrative northern Italian market, the equipment of the aircraft and the in-flight service were also tailored to the Italian market, for example Italian espresso was served in Business Class . However, there was no connection between the privatization of Alitalia and the establishment of Lufthansa Italia. However, Alitalia has drastically reduced its flight connections from Milan-Malpensa as a result of its own start-up.

An independent airline Lufthansa Italia SpA should gradually take over the routes from Deutsche Lufthansa. Lufthansa Italia had had its own Italian Air Operator Certificate since January 11, 2011 and has since been included in the list of Italian airlines of the ENAC .

As part of the realignment of the Italian business, the parent company decided in May 2011 to only continue the Lufthansa Italia brand until October 29, 2011. In return, the offer of Lufthansa itself and Air Dolomiti should be expanded on the Italian market.

As the last scheduled flight of Lufthansa Italia, LH3627 landed in Milan-Malpensa on October 29, 2011 at 4:35 pm from Palermo, which was operated with the Airbus 319-100 with the aircraft registration D-AKNJ .

On February 2, 2009, Lufthansa Italia started flights to Barcelona and Paris-Charles de Gaulle from Milan-Malpensa airport . On March 2, 2009, Brussels , Budapest , Bucharest and Madrid followed . Since March 29, 2009 Lufthansa Italia has also been flying to Lisbon and London-Heathrow, the frequencies to Brussels have been increased (the route has since been discontinued). Seasonal flights from Milan-Malpensa included Bari , Naples , Olbia and Palermo . Since October 31, 2010, Prague has also been served. In the meantime, Stockholm and Warsaw have also been served from Milan.

From April 1, 2009, Lufthansa Italia also competed directly with Alitalia on connections within Italy . However, the connection from Milan to Rome was given up again before flight operations ceased.

As of January 2011, the Lufthansa Italia fleet consisted of eight aircraft operated by Lufthansa Passage:

Five of these aircraft (aircraft registration D-AKNF to D-AKNJ ) came from the Lufthansa subsidiary Germanwings , three more (registration D-AILF, D-AILH and D-AILI ) from Lufthansa Passage itself. These were withdrawn from the Munich hub . Two more A319s, which Lufthansa Passenger Airlines had made available, have been back in regular Lufthansa service since July 2009, and an A319 that has meanwhile been operated by bmi for Lufthansa Italia has also been returned there.

As is customary with Lufthansa, the aircraft had city names as their baptismal names. The first two aircraft were called " Milano " ( D-AKNJ ) and " Varese " ( D-AKNG ), others are called " Torino " ( D-AKNF ), " Bologna " ( D-AKNH ), " Genova " ( D- AKNI ) and “ Roma ” ( D-AILI , previously “Ingolstadt”). One aircraft (D-AILH) kept its Lufthansa name “ Norderstedt ”.
