The Northern Italy pipeline system (NIPS) is a pipeline system of the NATO in Northern Italy and serves military fuel supply. It is operated by Infrastrutture e Gestioni SpA on behalf of the Italian Air Force

Connections and facilities

The NIPS, which has been in operation since 1961, has head-end stations in the port city of La Spezia and in Fiorenzuola d'Arda . The latter is the Eni - Refinery in Sannazzaro de 'Burgondi connected. The pipelines coming from the two terminals meet in Collecchio . From there, the southern pipeline runs along the Via Emilia to San Giorgio di Cesena and the Cervia military airfield , which is located near Rimini on the Adriatic Sea. The northern pipeline supplies the military airfields Ghedi , Verona , Istrana , Aviano and Rivolto . There are 19 pumping stations and 15 tank farms of various types for kerosene , diesel and MoGas along the pipeline system, which is around 900 kilometers long . The primary users are the Italian Air Force and Army and the US Air Force . The pipeline network has also served private companies for some time.

Others

The competent authority of the Italian Air Force also operates larger tank farms near Porto Santo Stefano , Taranto , Trapani and Monte Urpinu near Cagliari . From these camps there are, in some cases, further shorter pipelines to individual military bases.
