from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Brazil versus Italy 1982 was the decisive soccer match of group C (second final round) of the Brazilian and Italian national teams at the soccer world championship 1982 in Spain . The game took place on July 5, 1982 in Barcelona in the old stadium of Sarrià ( Estadi Sarrià ) in front of 44,000 spectators and ended 3-2 for Italy. Paolo Rossi scored all three goals for Italy. Franz Beckenbauer described the game as the most important game of the tournament after the World Cup. The game is considered to be one of the best in the history of the World Cup.

Starting position

Before the 1982 World Cup

After winning the 1970 World Cup , the Brazilian national team finished fourth in 1974 , which, however, did not meet the Brazilian demands. In 1978 with new stars like Zico they did not reach the final undefeated because Argentina and Peru split 6-0 under controversial circumstances. It was here that bribes were later admitted by the Argentine junta. Brazil beat Italy in the game for third place. At the 1980/81 mini-World Cup , Brazil reached the final after beating European champions Germany 4-1. Italy had achieved their last title as European champions in 1968 and were in the 1970 final against Brazil. The big generation around Riva and Rivera resigned after the World Cup in Germany in 1974. Enzo Bearzot took over the office of national coach in 1975 and initiated a change. In 1978 he reached fourth place at the World Cup and in 1980 also fourth place at the European Championships.

Brazil had won all the preliminary round matches against the USSR (2: 1), Scotland (4: 1) and New Zealand (4: 0) and defeated Argentina 3: 1 with their star Diego Armando Maradona in the first game of Group C. Brazil was considered a top favorite for the title.

Italy had not won a game in the preliminary round and only achieved second place in the group because of one more goal they scored against Cameroon. In the game against world champions Argentina they had won 2-1. Here the gentile was considered superior to Maradona. For a punch he received only yellow from the referee . Because of the one more goal they scored, Brazil only needed a draw, Italy had to win.

Game system

Italy essentially played in a 4-4-2 system. Goal: Zoff, defense: Gentile, Scirea, Collovati, Cabrini, midfield: Conti, Tardelli, Antognoni, Oriali, attack: Graziani and Rossi. It was acted out of a massive defense with man marking and one relied mainly on counterattacks, which should put the weak Brazilian defense under pressure. Brazil also had a 4-4-2 system with Peres (goal), Junior, Luizinho, Oscar, Leandro (defense), Zico, Socrates, Falcao, Toninho Cerezo (midfield), Eder and Serginho Chulapa (attack). This system was interpreted much more aggressively and flexibly. They acted with space coverage and very offensive full-backs. Zico and Socrates also acted very often in the storm, so that the system can also be described as 4-2-2-2.

Course of the game

Like the entire tournament, Brazil started offensive. The game system consisted of a 4-2-2-2, with all Brazilians except for the two central defenders playing very aggressively and standing high. Italy, on the other hand, played from a compact defense and counted on the counterattack. Claudio Gentile was responsible for the man marking Zico. His involvement resulted in a yellow card and a suspension in the semi-finals.

Paolo Rossi converted a cross from Antonio Cabrini with a header in the 5th minute . Sócrates was able to equalize seven minutes later. Again it was Rossi who caught a bad pass at the edge of the penalty area and used it. A goal in the second half by Giancarlo Antognoni was denied recognition because of alleged offside position. Brazil pushed for the equalizer, but ran against a compact Italian defense. In the 68th minute, Falcao took a pass Juniors and put a long shot into Zoff's net. With 22 minutes to go, Brazil was through again. In the 74th minute there was a corner for Italy. The blocked ball came back into the penalty area, where Rossi and Francesco Graziani waited. Both aimed to recover the ball, but Rossi was faster. He converted to 3-2. Brazil could no longer equalize and were eliminated.

The result is considered a victory for the system over the joy of playing. In the Brazilian press, the game was also referred to as 'The Tragedy of Sarrià' (br: A tragédia do Sarriá) and has also become part of Brazilian football folklore under this name.

consequences

Italy made it to the semi-finals and later won the World Cup for the third time, Brazil eliminated. Brazil should also fail comparatively early in the upcoming tournaments in 1986 and 1990, before becoming world champions again in 1994 (against Italy). For Italy it was the last title for 24 years. Zico called the day later the day football died. Without this defeat, football would have developed differently, more playful and less result-oriented. Claudio Gentile, who tore Zico's jersey with impunity during the man marking, said he had played within what was allowed and criticized Zico's criticism. The Guardian said that it was not football that died that day, but naivety. The system would have triumphed over an idea that was already dying.
