José Leandro de Souza Ferreira alias Leandro (born March 17, 1959 in Cabo Frio ) is a former Brazilian football player . He played on defense.
He was born in Cabo Frio, 150 kilometers east of Rio de Janeiro , and began his career at the age of 19 at the traditional Flamengo club in Rio de Janeiro. During his career, he won the Brazilian soccer championship three times with Flamengo, five times the state championship of the state of Rio de Janeiro, once the Libertadores da América , the Latin American Cup of national champions, and once the World Cup , the highest honor in club soccer, against Liverpool FC .
He also played 27 times for Brazil between September 1981 and May 1986 . For Brazil he took part in the Copa America 1983 and played all but two games as a regular player. Brazil made it to the final and became runner-up. For the Selecao he also took part in the 1982 World Cup in Spain. He played every game as a regular player and formed the defense with Luizinho and Oscar in front of goalkeeper Valdir Peres .
He was considered one of the best defenders in his playing days due to his excellent technique, able to serve midfielders and strikers with precise passes. He was also able to carry out attacks over the wings and seek closure himself, making him one of the most modern defenders of his time.
After several knee injuries in 1985, he moved to the position of central defender.
He refused to go to the World Cup in Mexico in 1986 because he did not agree with Renato's non- nomination .
Today he is the owner and manager of a restaurant and hotel in his hometown of Cabo Frio .
