Gabriel Humberto Calderón (born February 7, 1960 in Rawson , Chubut ) is a former Argentine football player and current coach .
Player career
society
Calderón began his career as a junior player with the Argentine clubs Club El Porvenir , Racing Club Avellaneda , Club Atlético Lanús and Club Atlético Independiente before the attacking midfielder moved to Betis Sevilla in Spain in 1983 . He stayed there until 1987 and played a total of 131 games, scoring 38 goals. In 1987 he moved to Paris Saint-Germain , where he scored a total of eleven goals in 102 games. Further stations in his career were the clubs FC Sion (1990 to 1992) and Lausanne-Sports (1993/1994) in Switzerland and SM Caen in France .
National team
In the years 1981 to 1990 Calderón was called up to play the Albiceleste a total of 23 times . He was also a striker for the 1982 and 1990 World Cups . As a national player, he scored a goal.
Coaching career
In 1994 Calderón ended his active career and initially worked as a television commentator before he began a coaching career at Caen in 1997 and worked there until 2000. He then coached his former team in Lausanne until 2003, before becoming the coach of the Saudi Arabian national soccer team in 2004 . There he succeeded in qualifying for the 2006 World Cup in Germany, but after a disappointing performance by the team at the West Asian Games in 2005, he was dismissed and replaced by the Brazilian Marcos Paquetá . From April 2007 to 2008 Calderón coached the national team of Oman . In June 2008 he took over the coaching position at the Saudi Arabian club Al-Ittihad , which he held until 2010. He then succeeded Eric Gerets as coach of Al-Hilal in Saudi Arabia , before taking over the national team of Bahrain after an interlude at Baniyas SC . As of August 13, 2013, Calderon was without a club. In January 2014, Betis Sevilla signed him as a coach.
