The Segunda División 1986/87 was the 56th season of the second highest Spanish football league . The first phase began on August 31, 1986 and ended on April 5, 1987. The second phase was held between April 12 and June 21, 1987. Master was Valencia .

Before the season

The Segunda División was reduced to 18 clubs. They initially met twice on 34 match days. The first twelve teams then played in two groups for promotion to the Primera División . The two group winners and the best runner-up rose.

The teams in places 13 to 18 from the first phase then played in the relegation round. The last three clubs should be relegated here. In the middle of the season it was decided to increase the Primera and Segunda División to 20 clubs, so that there was no relegated team this season.

Relegated from the Primera División of taking Valencia , Hércules CF and Celta Vigo in part. From Segunda División B came UE Figueres and Deportivo Xerez .
