Iole Fargnoli

Iole Fargnoli (* 1972 in Como ) is an Italian legal historian and full professor of Roman law at the University of Milan and the University of Bern .

Life and work

Iole Fargnoli studied from 1990 to 1994 at the law faculty of the State University of Milan and then researched for one year at the Institute for Roman Law at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität in Bonn thanks to a university scholarship from the University of Milan. There she wrote her first monograph "Studies on active legitimacy am interdict quod vi aut clam"; Released in 1998. For the three year period from 1998 to 2001 she won a doctoral scholarship at the University of Catanzaro 'Magna Graecia'. During these years she wrote her doctoral thesis "Alius solvit, alius repetit". In 2001 she studied "Indebitum Condicere" and received her doctorate as "Research Doctor" after completing research stays at the Institute for Roman Law, Late Roman Legal History and Modern Private History at the University of Graz and at the "Departemento de derecho Común" at the University of Santiago de Compostela would have. In 2003 she received the venia as 'Professore associato' at the University of Siena and has been teaching "Roman Law" at the University of Milan since 2005, where she received the full professorship in 2018. Since 2007 she has been a full professor of Roman law at the University of Bern. She not only teaches in German and Italian, but also in English and Spanish at research institutions, doctoral schools and summer schools. In 2014, 2016, 2019 she was visiting professor at Xiamen University, Sichuan University and Shaanxi Normal University in China.

She is the editor of Philipp Lotmar's work “Das Römische Rechts vom Error”, published in 2019 . The project “Philipp Lotmar's Masterpiece in Roman Law”, an unedited monograph on the error, was financed by the Swiss National Fund for the Promotion of Scientific Research.

Other publications include monographs, articles and essays published in Italy, Switzerland, Germany, Brazil, South Africa and China. Fargnoli's main scientific interest lies in the Roman Code of Obligations, late Roman legal history, the teaching of Roman law in the 19th century and, in recent years, especially Roman law as the foundation of the western legal tradition.
