The Segunda División 1956/57 was the 26th season of the second highest Spanish football league . It began on September 9, 1956 and ended on June 16, 1957. Between June 23 and 30, 1957, the relegation matches were played. Champions were real Gijon and FC Granada .
Before the season
The 40 teams were divided into two groups of 20 teams each. The two group winners were promoted to the Primera División . The last four clubs in each group were relegated directly, while the teams in positions 15 and 16 fought relegation against relegation.
Relegated from La Liga took Real Murcia , Deportivo Alavés , Cultural Leonesa and Hércules Alicante part.
From the Tercera División came Alicante FC , Real Avilés , Burgos CF , Córdoba FC , CD Eldense , Girona FC , Levante UD , Puente Genil CF and Rayo Vallecano . Algeciras CF took over the league place from UD España after the independence of Morocco.
