The Segunda División 1939/40 was the ninth season of the second highest Spanish football league and the first after a three-year break due to the Spanish Civil War . It began on December 3, 1939 and ended on March 3, 1940. The relegation games were played between March 10 and May 5, 1940. Champion Murcia FC .

Before the season

40 teams played in five groups of eight teams each. The group winners determined in the promotion round a direct promotion to the Primera División , since Real Oviedo was re-admitted to the Primera División. The second played against the third from bottom of the Primera División in the relegation for promotion.

Relegated from the Primera División took CA Osasuna in part, as well as 21 climbers , two of which (FC Levante and Valencia Gimnastico) merged before the season starts to UD Levante Gimnastico .
