Gimnástica de Torrelavega (full name: Real Sociedad Gimnástica de Torrelavega ) is a Spanish football club from the Cantabrian town of Torrelavega . The club, founded in 1907, plays in Segunda División B , Group 2 for the 2018/19 season .
history
On September 28, 1907, Gabino Teira called all athletes, business people and interested parties from Torrelavega together to realize his idea of a joint sports club. Among them were soccer players, discus throwers, cyclists, bowlers and many more. The meeting led to the foundation of the association.
The first game of Gimnástica took place on August 2, 1908 against Racing Santander . The club achieved the best placement in a season with fourth place in the Segunda División in 1949/50. In its history, Torrelavega was able to throw some first division clubs out of the Copa del Rey , even a 0-0 win at Camp Nou at the big FC Barcelona .
For the first time in 1928/29 Torrelavega played third class, but rose straight away in the premiere season. The club was allowed to compete in professional football for a total of nine seasons without ever getting stuck there. In recent years the club has developed into an elevator team between Segunda División B and Tercera División.
Stadion
Gimnástica de Torrelavega plays in the Estadio El Malecón , which has a capacity of 10,000 spectators. The stadium was inaugurated in 1922 and will be completely renovated in the future.
