history
The Estadio Helmántico in Salamanca , the capital of the province of the same name in the Spanish region of Castile-León , was built in 1970 and opened on April 8 of the same year. For the first game in the new stadium, the future home team, UD Salamanca , and the Portuguese top club Sporting Lisbon met for a friendly. The first competitive game at the Estadio Helmántico took place on April 26, 1970 between UD Salamanca and Real Valladolid (2-1) as part of the 34th matchday of the Spanish second division Segunda División . Since then, the UD Salamanca stadium has been used as a home game venue. The club played for twelve years in the highest Spanish league, the Primera División and was able to achieve a seventh place in the season 1974/75 as the best placement . However, UD was only able to collect titles in the Segunda División, the second division, which they won three times.
The Estadio Helmántico replaced the Estadio El Calvario in 1970 , where UD Salamanca had previously played. Today it offers space for 17,341 spectators. The Spanish national soccer team has played a number of international matches in the stadium . The first international match that took place at the Estadio Helmántico was one between Spain and Turkey in May 1971. Spain won 3-0 after goals from Manolín Cuesta (2) and Carlos Alonso González . Around seven years later, the opponent for Spain in the second international match in Salamanca was Cyprus . The Iberians won 5-0. A third international match followed in 1988, when Spain lost 3-1 to Sweden in a qualifying match for the European Championship in the same year . In 2005 the Spanish national team won another friendly in Salamanca 3-0 over China . The most recent international match in the UD Salamanca stadium took place on October 8, 2010, when Spain beat Lithuania 3-1 in qualifying for the 2012 European Championship in Poland and Ukraine .
On June 18, 2013, the UD Salamanca had to announce the dissolution of the association after a creditors' meeting due to debts amounting to around 23 million euros. The association's property, including the Estadio Helmántico, which is valued at around EUR 14 million, will be auctioned.
In June 2014 the auction of the Helmántico failed due to a lack of potential buyers. The offer was set at 14.75 million euros, but a 25 percent reduction in the second attempt was unsuccessful. Offers for the stadium can now be submitted until the end of 2014.
After the dissolution of the UD Salamanca, the CF Salmantino UDS was founded in 2013 and has been using the stadium for home games since 2016.
In mid-July 2016, Desarrollos Empresariales Deportivos SL became the new owner of the stadium.
