1972 Summer Olympics / Football / Qualification

The qualifying games for the 1972 Summer Olympics took place from February 7, 1971 to June 3, 1972. 82 countries from five confederations took part.

The 82 teams were divided among the five confederations as follows:

  • 22 teams from Europe
  • 10 teams from South America
  • 13 teams from North and Central America
  • 17 teams from Asia
  • 20 teams from Africa

Qualified teams

Since defending champions Hungary and organizers BR Germany were directly qualified and the Olympic finals were held with 16 teams, 14 free final round places were available for the remaining 82 teams; went away

South American Zone / CONMEBOL

South American Zone

In Colombia the qualification of the South American zone for the Olympic soccer tournament took place. A preliminary round was played in two groups of five teams. The top two teams in each group qualified for the continental finals. In the final round, the two participants for the 1972 Summer Olympics were determined.
