Uruguayan National Football Team / Olympic Games
The Uruguayan national soccer team first took part in the Olympic Games in Paris in 1924 and won the gold medal there as well as four years later in Amsterdam . For the Uruguayan association , these two medals count as world championships and the association therefore bears two stars for the two Olympic victories on its jerseys in addition to the two championship stars for the world championship titles in 1930 and 1950 . In 1950, FIFA recognized the two Olympic victories as world championships. After 1928 the A-team no longer took part. It was not until 1960 that a Uruguayan team took part in the qualifying competitions, but mostly failed to qualify. After the team qualified in 1976, participation was canceled. At the 2012 Games in London , a Uruguayan team took part again for the first time, qualifying by finishing second at the 2011 U-20 South American Championship . After a win and the first two defeats ever at the Olympic Games, Uruguay was eliminated after the preliminary round.
With the gold medal in 1924 and victories at the Copa America in 1923 and 1924 , Uruguay was the first team to win three major tournaments in a row. Spain only succeeded in doing this again with European championships in 2008 and 2012 and the 2010 World Cup .
