1980 Summer Olympics / Football / Qualification

The qualifying games for the 1980 Summer Olympics were held from March 7, 1979 to April 23, 1980. 80 countries from five confederations took part.

The 80 teams were divided among the five confederations as follows:

  • 20 teams from Europe
  • 07 teams from South America
  • 16 teams from North and Central America
  • 17 teams from Asia
  • 20 teams from Africa

Qualified teams

Since defending champion GDR and organizer Soviet Union were directly qualified and the Olympic finals were held with 16 teams, 14 free final round places were available for the remaining 80 teams; went away

In Colombia the qualification of the South American zone for the Olympic soccer tournament took place. The game was played in a group of seven teams. The two best-placed teams qualified for the 1980 Summer Olympics.

  1. a b c d e f g Because of the Soviet intervention in Afghanistan , many Western countries and their allies boycotted the Olympic Games.
  2. The United States moved one round as Mexico used professional players.
  3. a b c If two or more teams in a group / subgroup have the same number of points and the same goal difference after all games have ended, a play-off game was played in a neutral country at CONCACAF .
