1980 Summer Olympics / Football / Qualification
The qualifying games for the 1980 Summer Olympics were held from March 7, 1979 to April 23, 1980. 80 countries from five confederations took part.
The 80 teams were divided among the five confederations as follows:
- 20 teams from Europe
- 7 teams from South America
- 16 teams from North and Central America
- 17 teams from Asia
- 20 teams from Africa
Qualified teams
Since defending champion GDR and organizer Soviet Union were directly qualified and the Olympic finals were held with 16 teams, 14 free final round places were available for the remaining 80 teams; went away
