José Ignacio Sáez Ruiz , called Iñaki Sáez (born April 23, 1943 in Bilbao ) is a former Spanish football player and coach who, during his coaching career a. a. several times coached Athletic Bilbao and the Spanish national soccer team. As a player, the Basque was active for San Vicente, FC Barakaldo and Athletic Bilbao.
Player career
At the age of 15 Iñaki Sáez made his debut in the first team of the lower-class club San Vicente, which he left three years later in the summer of 1961 for FC Barakaldo . After a year as a regular player, the young Basque went to the great traditional club Athletic Bilbao, for which he played a total of twelve years from 1962 to 1974. During his time at Athletic, he even became a national player, but only made three appearances in 1968. He also won two Spanish Cup titles with his team (1969 and 1973).
Coaching career
Athletic Bilbao
Immediately after the end of his active career, Iñaki Sáez went to the youth work of Athletic Bilbao in 1975 , where he coached various teams for five years. For the 1980/81 season he got the first opportunity to train the Basque first team before taking over the second team from 1982 to 1986. In the 1985/86 season he replaced Javier Clemente as coach of the first team for a short time . Iñaki Sáez then took a two-year hiatus before returning to the Athletic's B-Team bench for three years in 1988. From 1990 to 1992 he was again in front of the first team.
Other clubs
In the summer of 1992 Iñaki Sáez put an end to his time as Bilbao's coach. For the first time, he became the club coach and hired in the Segunda División B relegated UD Las Palmas on. There he worked successfully for three years but missed the return to professional football. For this reason he got the chance to coach the Spanish first division club Albacete Balompié in 1996 , but rose with the team as the penultimate at the end of the season after a 2-0 away defeat at Atlético Madrid .
National team
In the summer of 1996, Iñaki Sáez took over the Spanish U-21 national team, which he coached for six years until 2002. With this he was able to win the 1998 Junior World Cup . After the soccer World Cup in Japan and South Korea in 2002 , he took over the position of Spanish national coach from the resigned José Antonio Camacho , but had to vacate his post for Luis Aragonés after the 2004 European soccer championship after being eliminated in the preliminary round .
