Luis Casas Pasarín (born April 16, 1902 in Pontevedra , † August 17, 1986 in Madrid ) was a Spanish football player and coach . In 1946 he was in charge of the Spanish national team.
Career
As a player
As a youth, Pasarín played for Atlético Pontevedra , the club in his hometown, and began his professional career in the nearby city of Vigo , where he first worked for Fortuna Vigo and, after its merger with Real Vigo Sporting , for six years for the newly founded Real Club Celta de Vigo played. As one of the first team captains of this club Pasarín won with Celta from 1924 three times in a row the Campeonato de Galicia , the regional championship of Galicia . In 1924, the defender took part in the Olympic Games with Spain and made his debut in the national team as part of the first round defeat against Italy . In the following two years Pasarín played a total of six internationals for his home country, the last on December 19, 1926 in Vigo against Hungary . In 1927 and 1928 Pasarín reached with Celta after defeats in the final against Deportivo La Coruña each the second place in the Galician championship. On December 30, 1928 he took part in the opening game of the Estadio Balaídos , which Celta won 7-0 against Real Unión Irún .
After the introduction of a nationwide league system, Pasarín moved to the second division club Valencia CF in 1929 . After promotion in the 1930/31 season , he made his debut in the Primera División on November 29, 1931, the second day of the 1931/32 season . He was also quickly appointed captain in Valencia and played 17 of 18 league games in the 1932/33 season. Valencia ended the season on the penultimate place in the table and thus barely escaped relegation. In the following two years he came to 22 other first division appearances. In the Copa del Presidente de la República 1934 he moved with his team under coach Jack Greenwell in the cup final, but lost 2-1 to the favored Madrid FC . In his last season 1934/35, Pasarín, who had lost a large part of his physique at this point, often only helped himself with fouls. In 1935 he therefore ended his career and worked from then on as a functionary in the Ministry of Labor in Madrid before the Spanish Civil War broke out.
As a trainer
After the civil war, Pasarín decided to pursue a career as a football coach. In 1946, he initially supervised the selection of Spain for an international match as national coach , before he took over the coaching position at his former club FC Valencia for the 1946/47 season . In his first year as a club coach, he won the Spanish championship with Valencia. The 1947/48 season ended with the club three points behind CF Barcelona in second place in the table. In the following three years Pasarín coached the first division club Celta Vigo and achieved respectable midfield placements with the club from his homeland of Galicia. In 1951 he went to Portugal and took over FC Porto for a year , with whom he was third behind the two Lisbon clubs Sporting and Benfica at the end of the season . In the 1953/54 season, Pasarín was in charge of the Spanish second division CD Málaga , with whom he immediately rose to the Primera División. In the 1954/55 season , however, he was released early after only two wins in the first 17 league games. Regardless of this, Malaga rose again at the end of the season. With the second division Real Oviedo Pasarín qualified in 1955/56 for the promotion play-offs, in which they just lost to CD Condal and Real Saragossa . At the beginning of the 1957/58 season he was again active as a coach of Celta Vigo and reached a decent seventh place in the table. In the following season , however, he was released early again after 17 matchdays. The club was relegated at the end of the season. For the season 1959/60 Pasarín returned to Real Oviedo, which had meanwhile been promoted to the Primera División. Despite four wins and three draws in the first ten games, he left the club in mid-November 1959.
As a result, Pasarín ended his 13-year career as a football coach in 1959, during which he had worked for five different clubs and the Spanish national team and had been able to win a Spanish championship. He died in Madrid on August 17, 1986 at the age of 84 .
