Extremadura Unión Deportiva , or Extremadura UD for short, is a Spanish football club from the city of Almendralejo in the province of Badajoz in the autonomous community of Extremadura . In the 2018/19 season , the club will play in the Segunda División , the second highest Spanish football league, for the first time .

history

March through from sixth to third class

The history of Extremadura UD began around 2007, when the Club de Fútbol Extremadura, also from Almendralejo, was already struggling with considerable financial difficulties. Already at this time they were considering founding a new club in the city or, if necessary , taking over the Atlético San José Promesas club, which was founded in 1986 and is represented in lower-class amateur football . Nevertheless, the decision was made to completely re-establish the club, with the club, which was supported by many, was presented to the public in the summer of 2007. The first president of the club, which was founded as an alternative to the formerly successful club in the region, was Diego Madera , under whose leadership the new club played in the third-highest Spanish division for the first time in the 2010/11 season and who the club until his withdrawal from the Remained loyal to the presidency in summer 2014.

The new club started playing in the 2007/08 season in the regional 1ª Categoría , the Spanish sixth division, and immediately became champions under coach Juan Francisco Godoy , known as Pinky . 2008/09 Extremadura UD met in the fifth class Regional Preferente on the CF Extremadura and rose, while the older of the two clubs finished the season only in 17th place, as a renewed champion in the next higher Tercera Division . In the Tercera División 2009/10 , the men's team played in Group 14, which includes clubs from Extremadura. In this still regional group, the club ranked third in the final standings of regular time with 22 points behind group winners CD Badajoz and ten points behind second-placed Jerez CF. In the season-closing promotion play-offs, Extremadura UD only made it from the first round to the semi-finals due to the away goals rule and from this also only due to this rule to the final final round. In this, the team prevailed 4-2 against Atlético Mancha Real in the first leg and after the 0-0 draw in the second leg was one of the promoters from the fourth-highest Spanish football league to the third-highest in the country. At the end of the same season, CF Extremadura, which was represented in the fifth division and was ultimately only held by the municipality of Almendralejo and thus by the public sector, was finally dissolved.

Five years in the Tercera División and first cup participation

Under coach Juan Marrero Roig , who also looked after the team in 2009/10, and his successor José Diego Pastelero , as well as Raúl Procopio , who took over as coach at the beginning of March 2011, the club took part in Segunda División B 2010/11 . At the same time, the second club from Almendralejo, Atlético San José Promesas, made it into the fourth division and took part for the first time with a men's team in Group 14 of the Tercera División from this season. In the Segunda División B, however, one could not hold on and rose as 19th and thus penultimate of Group 1 directly back to the Tercera División. In the next few seasons, the club always played at the front, but also had several coach changes during this time. Raúl Procopio also followed in the summer with Agustín Izquierdo, the longest reigning coach of Extremadura UD. Under him, the club reached third place in the table in the final ranking of Group 14 of the Tercera División of the 2011/12 season and qualified through this for the championship-decisive promotion play-offs. After an overall result of 2: 1 over Haro Deportivo (2: 0 and 0: 1) and a total score of 4: 2 over Espanyol Barcelona B (2: 1 and 2: 1), the team made it into the third division or remaining in the fourth division decisive final round. In this Extremadura was first defeated in the first leg against Atlético Sanluqueño with 0: 1 and then lost the subsequent second leg with 2: 1, which meant staying in the Tercera División.

In 2012/13 under Agustín Izquierdo even the first place at the end of regular time in Group 14 of the Tercera División with nine points ahead of the pursuers Badajoz UD (not to be confused with the former professional club CD Badajoz , which is just starting again this season in the Spanish sixth division). In the subsequent promotion play-offs of the group winners, Extremadura failed, after tight results against CD Toledo and FC Utebo , in the semi-finals of the normal promotion play-offs, also with a tight total score of 2: 2 due to the away goals rule against the B- Team of FC Granada and had to stay in the fourth highest Spanish football league again. The second leg against Granada, which ended in a 2-1 victory for Extremadura, took place in front of a historic crowd of over 6,000 spectators at the Estadio Francisco de la Hera . After the recent missed promotion Izquierdo left the club; He was followed by José Luis Diezma , who last worked as a coach at Real Ávila CF for two years and who took part in the Spanish Football Cup for the first time with the club in the 2012/13 season . However, Diezma was given a leave of absence after a little over two months in office and was given by Adolfo Muñoz . While Diezma had lost four competitive games in a row with the team (including the first-time participation of Extremadura UD in the Spanish Football Cup when the team lost 2-1 to third division club Albacete Balompié in the first round of the Copa del Rey 2013/14 ) Muñoz acted more successfully, but achieved only sixth place with the team in the final ranking of 2013/14 in Group 14 of the Tercera Division, which was again expanded by starting place.

In the 2014/15 season , before President Diego Madera resigned, Francisco Javier Diosdado García , known as Cisqui , took over as coach . However, this was replaced during the current season in April 2015 by the well-known Juan Marrero Roig. Under Roig, the team reached in Group 14, which had been reduced to 20 team again, behind arch rivals Mérida AD , a second place in the table at the end of regular time and failed again in the promotion play-offs; this time already in the semi-finals. However, the renewed promotion to the third highest league only succeeded in 2016. Juan Marrero Roig led his team in the Tercera División 2015/16 to group victory in a closely spaced top fifth of the table. As group winners, Extremadura then took part in the promotion play-off of the group winners and defeated UB Conquense after a 0-0 first leg with 2-0 in the second leg, which meant the renewed promotion to the third-class Spanish Segunda Division B.

Return to Segunda Division B and promotion to the second division

After the promotion, the club's management separated from Juan Marrero Roig as coach and hired the only 28-year-old Diego Merino as the new head coach. He was on the bench in a total of ten competitive games at Extremadura UD and had to leave the club in mid-October. After all, he had led the club into the second round of the Copa del Rey 2016/17 , but was otherwise only able to record one more victory (1-0 win over Real Linense between the first and second round match in the cup) and stayed with the team the remaining games without a win. Even before the start of this season , the club's management had reached an agreement with the COINSA group that was to bring the club into professional football within three years at the latest, after which the club was bought up by the same in winter 2016/17. After Merino's successor on the coaching post, the 39-year-old former Spanish international Juan Velasco Damas , failed miserably and had to vacate his job after two wins, two draws and seven defeats from eight league games at the end of December, the club changed during the said winter break . There were a total of 13 new signings on the player side, the coach and the sports director were also replaced. The former professional player Juan Sabas , who already had several years of experience as a coach, was hired as the new coach . Sabas stayed until the end of the season and should lead the team away from the relegation places, which he finally managed with a 13th place in the final ranking.

In preparation for the 2017/18 season , the men's team of Extremadura UD played a friendly against Spanish first division club Betis Sevilla on the occasion of the club's tenth anniversary . After Juan Sabas left the club in the summer, Agustín Izquierdo, who had already coached the team from 2011 to 2013 for a period of two years, took over as coach. In mid-October Izquierdo was relieved of his duties after a consistently balanced nine championship games and replaced by Manolo Ruiz . For Ruiz, too, after 16 championship games, it was time to leave; by this time he had brought it with the team on eight wins, four draws and four defeats; of his last five league games in office, he won only one. He was followed by the former Spanish international and star player Rafael Martín Vázquez , who, however, had to vacate his place again after just over two months after only three wins and two draws from eleven league games. Juan Sabas, who left office after six months in the summer, was introduced as the new coach. Sabas then looked after the team in the last two games of the season and achieved a 2-0 away win in the derby against Mérida AD and a 5-0 home win over the second team from Betis Sevilla in the last game of the regular season. Although Extremadura had four different coaches this season, the team always stayed in the upper part of the table and on the places of the promotion play-offs. Extremadura prevailed in the first round due to the away goals rule against Deportivo Fabril and subsequently defeated CD Mirandés and FC Cartagena . After the 1-0 win in the first leg against Cartagena, a 0-0 draw in the second leg on June 24, 2018 was enough for the first promotion to the second highest Spanish football league, the Segunda División .

First season in the Segunda División

For the first season in the Segunda División, the club's management announced significant new signings. Including that of the AD Alcorcón coming and coming from the region goalkeeper Casto Espinosa Barriga , called Casto , the last at RSC Anderlecht gambling Diego Capel or the last on loan at Miami FC active Vincenzo Rennella . The Extremadura UD played their first game in the country's second-highest football league on August 19, 2018 and drew 1-1 at Real Oviedo . Álex Barrera scored the first competitive goal in a professional game in Extremadura . In the second main round of the Copa del Rey 2018/19 , for which the team qualified due to its placement in the final classification of the Segunda División B 2017/18, the team lost 1-0 to AD Alcorcón on September 12, 2018. After the draw in the first game of the season, Extremadura lost four league games before they celebrated their first competitive win (4-1) in professional football against Rayo Majadahonda , also a newcomer, on September 22, 2018 .

When Extremadura UD was founded, a takeover of the club was discussed before the decision was made to found the club from scratch.
