Esteban Félix Granero Molina (born July 2, 1987 in Madrid ), also called "El Pirata" ( Spanish for "the pirate"), is a Spanish football player . Granero usually plays in the central or attacking midfielder position , occasionally on the right flank.

Career

Esteban Granero began playing in Real Madrid's youth at the age of eight . He went through all age categories of the club and made his debut on November 27, 2005 at the age of 18 against Albacete Balompié in the club's second team, Real Madrid Castilla , then playing in the Segunda División .

For the 2007/08 season Granero was loaned to Getafe FC , for which he played his first game in the Primera División on September 16, 2007 against Espanyol Barcelona . With his team he reached the quarter-finals of the UEFA Cup and the final of the Copa del Rey that year . Granero was transferred to Getafe in the summer of 2008, but Real Madrid retained a buyback option that was drawn after a year. Granero signed a contract with the "Royal" until 2013.

At Real Madrid, Granero was a regular in defensive midfield with 31 league appearances in the 2009/10 season . In the 2010/11 season he lost this regular place as a result of the commitment of Sami Khedira , but came to another 17 league and 32 competitive games. In the 2011/12 season Granero was temporarily only a supplementary player and behind Xabi Alonso , Khedira and Lass only the fourth force in defensive midfield. Over the course of the season, however, he regained the trust of coach José Mourinho and completed another 13 games in the second half after four short appearances in the first half of the season. At the end of the season he became Spanish champions with the club.

For the 2012/13 season Granero moved to the Queens Park Rangers in the Premier League . He signed a five-year contract.

After relegation with QPR Granero moved after a league game in the Football League Championship in mid-August 2013 on loan back to the Primera División to Real Sociedad . Due to a torn cruciate ligament, he was only able to play four league games. Still, Real Sociedad pulled the purchase option and tied Granero to itself until June 30, 2018.

In July 2017 Granero moved to Espanyol Barcelona .

National team

Esteban Granero played with Spain in the U-17 European Championship in 2004 , where his team only lost to France in the final. Two years later, he won the U-19 European Championship in 2006 with his national team . At the Junior World Cup in 2007 he was again part of the squad, the Spaniards failed in this tournament in the quarter-finals on penalties against the Czech Republic. His last appearance so far in a final tournament was the U-21 European Championship 2009 , where the Iberians were eliminated in the preliminary round.
