Wu Lei ( Chinese  武 磊 , Pinyin Wǔ Lěi ; born November 19, 1991 in Nanjing ), known in German-speaking countries under the customary name order Lei Wu , is a Chinese football player who has played for Espanyol Barcelona in the Spanish league since 2019 . Wu is one of the most talented players in his country, making his debut at the age of 14 years and 287 days, holding the record in China for the youngest player to play in professional football. Wu is best known for his dribbling skills, his shooting skills and his sometimes spectacular goals, which is why he is also called "China's Maradona " .

Career

society

Wu first drew attention to himself at the AFC U14 Boys' Festival 2004, when he won the tournament with his country and made a significant contribution with six goals. Two years later, at the age of 14, Wu made his debut on September 2, 2006 in a 5-5 loss to Yunnan Lijiang Dongba , when his club was still playing in the second division . He scored his first goal on August 30, 2008 against Qingdao Hailifeng, his club won the game 2-0. Wu quickly became a regular player and cemented his achievements with numerous goals. In the 2012 season of the second division, he and his team finally achieved promotion, Wu himself scored 17 goals and was one of the main players in this success. The former coach of the Chinese national team Xu Genbao , who was his coach in Wu's youth, recognized Wu's achievements with the words "Wu Lei is a gift from God" .

Wu's talent did not escape the European clubs either. At the Sun Trophy Cup 2013, which was held in Spain, Wu met twice. In the semifinals it was over, Shanghai was eliminated against the Molde FK team , which was then trained by Ole Gunnar Solskjær , but Wu made a lasting impression with his dribbles and goals. Solskjær then expressed serious interest in Wu's commitment, but the transfer did not materialize for various reasons. Wu then stated that if another European club wanted to sign him, he would not hesitate to accept the offer.

Before the start of the 2013 season, Wu set himself the goal of scoring “ at least ten goals” , a goal he was able to surpass with 15 goals. With Shanghai SIPG he reached ninth place in the table, Wu was top scorer of his team and third place in the league's top scorer list. It is worth mentioning that Wu managed a hat trick three times , no other player succeeded in that season. In the following years he was able to continue his good performance consistently.

At the end of January 2019, Wu moved to Spain for the Catalan club Espanyol Barcelona and made his debut on February 3, 2019 when he came on for Dídac Vilà in the 78th minute in a league game against Villarreal . On the following day he came in the game against Rayo Vallecano in the 34th minute, as Pablo Piatti had to be replaced due to injury. In the 72nd minute he took a penalty for his new club, which Borja Iglesias then converted. Thus, Wu helped decisively to the later 2: 1 success. He scored his first goal for Espanyol on March 2, 2019 in a league game against Real Valladolid , making Wu the first Chinese to score in the Spanish top flight.

National team

Wu also met regularly in the national team, so that he was appointed for the first time in 2010 for the seniors with whom he took part in the 2010 East Asian Cup. He made his debut here on February 14, 2010 against Hong Kong , which China won 2-0. Wu Lei is now an integral part of the Chinese national team.

Play style

Wu plays with Zug to the gate. He often moves from the outside lanes into the opponent's penalty area and quickly seeks completion. He himself says: "I always look for good opportunities, and when one comes up , I try to assert myself against the defenders with my agility and my speed." Wu also tries this from a distance, if he takes the opportunity he has already achieved some remarkable hits. In addition, despite his comparatively small size of 1.73 m, he has a strong header and proved this with various goals.

Trivia

Wu Lei's move to Spain was accompanied by enormous media interest in China, and many Chinese also followed the change process closely. Just 48 hours after the announcement of the move to Espanyol Barcelona, over 1,600 jerseys were sold with his name, now the number of jerseys sold is over 5,000. Although Wu only played for almost 15 minutes in his first game for Espanyol Barcelona, over 40 million viewers in China watched the game against Villarreal .
