Career
society
After five years in the youth of the CD Lugo - until the age of 13 he started playing football - moved López in the 1999/2000 season at the age of 18 years in the first team of the third division, and denied two games in the Segunda División B . Discovered by scouts, he moved to Real Madrid's third team for the 2000/01 season , which competed in the fourth-class Tercera División . The following season he spent on loan again in the third division with AD Alcorcón . However, there he was not used, so that he returned to Real Madrid C afterwards. There he spent another season before moving up one step in 2003 to the club's second team, Real Madrid Castilla (then officially Real Madrid B). After a season as a substitute goalkeeper, López was the goalkeeper of the Castilla in his second year and rose with the team in 2005 in the Segunda División .
He was then a substitute goalkeeper for the club's first team from 2005. López made his first appearance for Real Madrid in a 2-1 loss in the Champions League against Olympiacos Piraeus . His first games in the Primera División he was able to book towards the end of the 2005/06 season when he represented Iker Casillas , who was suspended after a dismissal . After two years in the first team squad, where he was always overshadowed by Casillas in the championship and Champions League, but was allowed to play the cup games and always performed well in these, Diego López moved after winning the Spanish championship in the summer 2007 to FC Villarreal .
In Villarreal, López quickly established himself as a goalkeeper and played 171 games in the Primera División in the following five years. He and his club qualified several times for the Europa League and Champions League. After the club's surprising relegation in the 2011/12 season, López moved to Sevilla FC for 3.5 million euros and signed a five-year contract with the Andalusians.
On January 25, 2013, López returned to his youth club Real Madrid after just six months in Seville for almost four million euros and signed a four-year contract. With the commitment, Los Blancos responded to the failure of their goalkeeper Iker Casillas, who had recently broken a metacarpal bone in a cup game . López established himself in Casillas' absence as number one in goal and replaced the multiple world goalkeeper and long-time captain of the Madrilenians not only under coach José Mourinho , but also his successor Carlo Ancelotti as regular goalkeeper. Casillas was only used again in cup games and the Champions League in the 2013/14 season. López experienced his team's two title wins in the Copa del Rey and the Champions League from the bench.
At the beginning of the 2014/15 season, Ancelotti made it clear that such a rotation would no longer exist. On August 5, 2014, Real Madrid signed Keylor Navas, the third well-known goalkeeper. López then moved to the Italian Serie A for AC Milan . He signed a four-year contract until June 30, 2018.
In 2016, López switched to a one-year loan deal and then to Espanyol Barcelona for free .
National team
For the Galician football team he played against Uruguay in 2005 and against Ecuador in 2006 . On March 20, 2009 he was appointed to the squad of the Spanish national team for the first time and on August 12 of the same year Diego López finally celebrated his debut in a friendly against Macedonia . He took part in the following Confederations Cup in 2009 , in which Spain finished third.
