Lassana Diarra (born March 10, 1985 in Paris ), also known as Lass for short , is a former French football player . He played mainly in defensive midfield.

Club career

Diarra started his career at Le Havre AC , where he quickly made a name for himself as a defensive midfielder. Through consistently good performances, he made the leap into the French U-21 national team . Accordingly, other clubs soon became aware of him. In July 2005 he moved to Chelsea for four million euros .

At Chelsea, Diarra should be built up under coach José Mourinho to succeed Claude Makélélé in the long term . So he came in his first season only to a few missions, as the defensive midfield at the English champions was still dominated by Makélélé and Michael Essien . Diarra received match practice with the reserve team of Chelsea FC and during some cup games. Towards the end of the 2005/06 season , when Chelsea FC were already the champions, Diarra came to his first starting eleven on the last two game days. Since he only played ten games in the Premier League in the 2006/07 season , Diarra moved to the 2007/08 season for city rivals Arsenal . Even there, however, he only came to seven league games in the first half of the season, so that he left the club again after six months and joined Portsmouth FC . In Portsmouth Diarra was finally a regular and contributed with good performances to win the 2007/08 FA Cup .

In December 2008, Portsmouth FC and Real Madrid agreed on the transfer of the French midfielder. From January 2009 Diarra was in the service of the Madrilenians. In the second half of the 2008/09 season he was a regular with the Royal and came on 19 starting eleven. After the commitment of the defensive midfielders Xabi Alonso and Esteban Granero , the competition increased in the 2009/10 season . At the end of the season, in which he played 23 league and 30 competitive games, Diarra had lost his regular place. With the commitment of another defensive midfielder in the form of Sami Khedira , he had to be content with the reserve role even after the reunification with coach José Mourinho in the 2010/11 season . Towards the end of the season, however, he moved back into the regular formation. So Diarra came in the first half of the 2011/12 season on twelve starting eleven. However, he was rarely able to convince playfully. In the second half of the season Diarra only made four appearances. Real Madrid became Spanish champions.

On August 31, 2012 Diarra moved to Russia in the Premjer League to Anzhi Makhachkala . After the club had announced a realignment for financial reasons, Diarra joined the league rivals Lokomotiv Moscow for the 2013/14 season . After a year at his new club, Diarra fell out with coach Leonid Kuchuk and refused to participate in training, whereupon he was released in August 2014. Due to a contractual dispute, he was only allowed to play for a new club in the 2015/16 season. On July 24, 2015, he signed a contract with the French first division club Olympique Marseille .

In February 2017 it became known that Diarra Olympique had left Marseille. After being out of a club for a short time, he signed a three-year contract with the Arab club al-Jazira Club from the United Arab Emirates . On January 23, 2018, Paris Saint-Germain announced they had signed Diarra. On February 8, 2019, the contract with Diarra, which had not been part of the Paris squad since November 2018, was terminated with immediate effect. On February 21, 2019, he announced the end of his playing career.

National team

Diarra took part in the 2006 European Under-21 Championship in Portugal , where he reached the semi-finals with France. He was used four times and received a yellow card.

In the senior national team he made his debut on March 24, 2007 against Lithuania . At the European Championship finals in 2008 , he was part of the French squad , but was not used in any game.

On May 22, 2010, he had to cancel participation in the World Cup in South Africa due to illness after he had been nominated by Raymond Domenech . After that, he only wore the blue national dress one more time in August 2010 - this was his 28th A international match.

On October 8, 2015, Diarra was surprisingly back in the starting line-up of the French national team in the friendly against Armenia .

Personal

Diarra is an avowed Muslim . On November 13, 2015, his cousin Asta Diakité died in the terrorist attacks in Paris , while Diarra played at the same location in the friendly between Germany and France .
