Marco Russ (born August 4, 1985 in Hanau ) is a former German soccer player . The central defender , who was also used as a defensive midfielder , played most of his career at Eintracht Frankfurt . With the Hessians he rose to the Bundesliga in 2005 and reached the final of the DFB Cup three times . The title win in May 2018 was the biggest success of his career.

Beginnings in Hanau

Russ grew up in the Hanau district of Großauheim and started playing football at the age of four at his home club VfB 06 Großauheim. Under his first coach, his father Rainer Russ, and his assistant coach Steffen Heiliger, he played there from the F to the D youth.

Eintracht Frankfurt

In 1996 Russ moved to the youth department of Eintracht Frankfurt . There he went through the youth teams and was from 2004 in the squad of the licensed team of Eintracht. In the 2004/05 season he came to three inserts in the 2. Bundesliga and climbed into the Eintracht Bundesliga on. The 1.90 m tall central defender was initially unable to play, but was able to convince at indoor tournaments during the winter break. On the 26th matchday of the 2005/06 season he was substituted on in the 76th minute in the 5-2 home win over MSV Duisburg and played there in the unfamiliar right position in the midfield diamond. In the game against 1. FC Köln on matchday 27, Friedhelm Funkel then used him in the defensive area together with Daniyel Cimen in central defense due to numerous failures . Since then, Russ has been an integral part of Frankfurt's central defense and reached the DFB Cup final with Eintracht , in which they were defeated 0-1 to Bayern Munich on April 29, 2006 ; Russ was on the field for the full season in both the semi-finals and the final. Because of this performance, the team played in the UEFA Cup the following season , Russ was used twice in this competition. In January 2008 he extended his contract prematurely until June 30, 2012. Frankfurt ended the 2010/11 season as penultimate and was relegated to the 2nd Bundesliga. By this time, Russ had played 163 Bundesliga games with 13 goals for Eintracht.

VfL Wolfsburg

After Eintracht's relegation, Russ played one more game in the 2nd Bundesliga before moving to VfL Wolfsburg in July 2011 ; he signed a contract until June 30, 2014. After initial difficulties, he was able to prevail as a regular under Felix Magath . In the first half of the 2012/13 season , however, Russ did not play a single competitive game.

Return to Frankfurt

During the winter break of the 2012/13 season, Russ initially returned to Eintracht Frankfurt on loan until the end of the season. The loan deal also included a purchase option, which the Frankfurters did not use. After the end of the loan period, Russ should therefore return to Wolfsburg, but he signed a new three-year contract in Frankfurt in June 2013. There he prevailed again as a regular player in central defense under head coach Armin Veh and played in the 2013/14 season with the Frankfurt team in the Europa League, in which he made six appearances before he was eliminated in the sixteenth finals against FC Porto . On May 18, 2016, Eintracht announced that Russ had testicular cancer . After the game against SV Darmstadt 98 on April 30, 2016, he tested positive for the hormone hCG , which in retrospect turned out not to be doping , but rather a blood value caused by the tumor. He was operated on on May 23, 2016. In the 1-0 victory in the quarter-final of the DFB Cup against Arminia Bielefeld on February 28, 2017, he made his comeback with his substitution shortly before the end of the game. After another victory in the semifinals against Borussia Mönchengladbach , Russ was again in the DFB Cup final with Frankfurt on May 27, 2017 , but had to admit defeat to Borussia Dortmund 1: 2 there with his team . In the 2017/18 season he also played his way through to the DFB Cup final with Eintracht and won the title there after a 3-1 final win against FC Bayern Munich; he was on the field from the start of every cup game. On September 30, 2018, Russ completed his 300th Bundesliga game in a 4-1 home win against Hannover 96 . In the Europa League he reached the semi-finals with the team in the 2018/19 season ; Russ was used in 4 group matches during the competition. At the beginning of the season 2019/20 he retired in EL qualifier against FC Vaduz an Achilles tendon injury to and came in that season with no further obligation stake. After the last Bundesliga game of the 2019/20 season, Russ ended his active career and switched to analyzing Eintracht's licensed players.

National team

On May 16, 2006 Russ completed a game for the first time in the German U20 national team in the 2: 3 defeat against the Austrian U21 national team . In August 2006 he was appointed to the squad of the U21 national team by coach Dieter Eilts , but was not used.
