Großauheim is a district of Hanau located on the north bank of the Main in the Hessian Main-Kinzig district and with around 13,000 inhabitants the largest district.

history

middle Ages

The name with the ending "-heim" indicates a foundation in the time of the Frankish conquest , around the 6th century. The place name Euuicheim is likely to be derived from a personal name Ewic and could have evolved into Oweheim and finally Auheim in the subsequent period.

The oldest surviving documentary mention of Auheim could come from the time of Charlemagne , although it is not handed down in the original, but only as a copy in the Lorsch Codex : “In the name of Christ, on the 3rd day of April, in the 38th year of the reign of the Emperor Karl ... I give Irminrat ... the Lorsch Monastery ... under Abbot Adalungus ... in Rumpenheim, Bellingen and in Euuicheim ... ".

The first distinction between Klein- and Großauheim can be found in a list of the income of the Lords of Eppstein from 1270.

Großauheim was in the office of Steinheim , which initially belonged to the Lords of Eppstein , was pledged several times by them and then in 1425 to the Elector and Archbishop of Mainz , Konrad III. was sold by Daun . In 1438 the village was - probably temporarily and only briefly - in the possession of Count Reinhard II of Hanau as a pledge . For several centuries Auheim belonged to Kurmainz .

Modern times

In the years 1631–1634, during the Thirty Years' War , King Gustav II Adolf confiscated the office as spoils of war and gave it to the later Hanau Counts Heinrich Ludwig von Hanau-Münzenberg and Jakob Johann von Hanau-Münzenberg , who were allied with him . Since both counts died soon and the Peace of Westphalia set the normal year 1624, Großauheim came back to Kurmainz, where it remained until 1803 when it fell to the Grand Duchy of Hesse-Darmstadt in the course of secularization . In 1816 it came to the Electorate of Hesse , where it was incorporated into the Office of Büchertal . During the administrative reform in Kurhessen in 1821, the newly formed district of Hanau came into being .

Großauheim was still a farming village until the end of the 19th century. In the course of the 20th century, industrial branches such as Marienhütte, BBC and Rütgerswerke (today RÜTGERS Basic Aromatics GmbH) and VDM emerged.

The community has had electricity since 1912. This was produced in our own power plant. The water supply network was put into operation in 1913. The Hanau harbor, built in 1924, is largely located in the Auheim district . In 1956 the state of Hesse granted Großauheim city rights.

On December 31, 1971, the neighboring village of Wolfgang was incorporated. On July 1, 1974, as part of the regional reform in Hesse, the city of Großauheim was incorporated into the city of Hanau by law. For Großauheim / Wolfgang , a common local district with local advisory board and local councilor was set up.

Großauheim coat of arms

Blazon : In the red shield under three silver pilgrim shells standing in the head of the shield a six-spoke silver wheel.

On June 19, 1950, the community of Großauheim in the Hanau district was granted the right to use a coat of arms by the Hessian Ministry of the Interior , and it was designed by the heraldist Otto Korn .

This coat of arms was re-approved in unchanged form on September 13, 1973 after the merger of Großauheim and Wolfgang of the new town of Großauheim.

The shells are the symbol of St. James , the church patron of Großauheim. The wheel below is a Mainz wheel and shows the historical affiliation of the place to the Electorate of Mainz .

flag

Together with the coat of arms, the Ministry of the Interior also approved a flag, which is described as follows:

"In the red field under three silver pilgrim shells a silver six-spoke wheel."

Town twinning

Großauheim has been twinned with Conflans-Sainte-Honorine in France since 1965 .

Culture and sights

societies

Around 40 clubs are active in Großauheim and organized as members of the Großauheimer clubs. Sports clubs, choirs, orchestras, parishes, political parties, small animal breeders, neighborhood help, welfare, interest groups, ... The list of clubs can be viewed on the IGV page. Some of them have their own club houses, and everyone can use the urban rooms in the old school.

Buildings

The banks of the Main are shaped by the three churches Gustav-Adolf (1911), St. Paul (1907) and St. Jakobus (1767). The most famous sight in town is the Großauheim Museum , which is located in the old power station, which was built in 1906. In addition to exhibits from the local industrial, craft and agricultural history, it also exhibits sculptures by August Gaul . On the first floor of the museum, which was inaugurated again in August 2010, there are exhibits on the work of the Großauheim painter and glass artist August Peukert . On the occasion of steam days, an open-air museum in the adjacent outdoor area is also accessible, which is run by the Förderverein Dampfmaschinenmuseum e. V., which also includes many exhibits in the museum. The museum belongs to the city of Hanau, but is run by the Förderverein Dampfmaschinenmuseum e. V. and from the Heimat- und Geschichtsverein 1929 Großauheim e. V. funded.

The “postcard view” of Großauheim is the “Mainwiese”, a broad, expansive meadow which, together with a promenade in place of the historic towpath, extends along the entire bank area and has an unmistakable silhouette thanks to the three churches.

The old town hall is located in the center of the village. However, it only served as the town hall from 1922 to 1934. Its origins lie in the late Middle Ages as a Seligenstadt monastery courtyard and as a Kurmainzisches. Office building. A plaque with the year 1487 is embedded in the facade. Since the early 18th century it has been used as the "Zum Goldenen Löwen" inn. The actual old village hall with an apartment for the community baker, oven, poor room and many other uses stood opposite on the corner of Hintergasse / An der Pforte until it was demolished in 1902.

In the center of the village there are three school buildings at Hans-Gruber-Platz. The old school building, Taubengasse 3, has its origins in the early 19th century. In 1984 it was saved from demolition, renovated and now serves as a meeting place for the Großauheim clubs with several halls. The adjoining building, Taubengasse 5, built in 1905/06 as a Taubengasse school, is now called the community center above the entrance arch. The building of the Haggasse School, Haggasse 4, opposite the old school on the other side of the old schoolyard, is dominantly free. From 1934 this building served as the town hall; after the incorporation in 1974, the district office stayed here. In 2016 the building was sold to a private investor and is to be converted into high-quality apartments. The district office had to move to the community center.

In the north lies the Bulau ; a forest area that extends to the neighboring municipality of Rodenbach and through which the Limes runs. Between Großauheim and Bulau lies the district of Wolfgang , which merged with Großauheim in 1972 and was then incorporated into Hanau together with Großauheim in 1974. Both districts have a local ready in common. The industrial park and the conversion areas of the Alt-Argonner and New-Argonner fall within the Wolfgang area. The former military area became a residential district, but a refuge for Przewalski horses was created in 2009 in part of the parade ground, Campo Pond .

regional customs

In honor of St. Roch , a Rochus procession takes place every year in Großauheim to Rochusplatz to show the gratitude of the people of Großauheim after having overcome the plague in the 17th century. The well-known “Rochusmarkt” as a commercial market on the initiative of the Großauheim trade association is held regularly in September along the main street and around Rochusplatz.

Infrastructure

education

In Großauheim there are three primary schools ( August-Gaul-Schule , Eichendorffschule, Limesschule) and an integrated comprehensive school with upper secondary level, the Lindenau School .

There are also two private schools in town: the Catholic girls ' secondary school St. Josef and the Protestant Paul Gerhardt School .

traffic

North of Großauheim runs the motorway-like federal highway 43a , which connects the town to the supra-regional motorway network.

The place is connected to the rail network via the Großauheim (Kr Hanau) station on the Main-Spessart-Bahn . The Hanauer tram AG operated Grossauheim with bus lines 6 and 7, also the regional bus line is 566 by the United Auheimer center.

conversion

After the Second World War, the US Army built two barracks in Großauheim, the Großauheim barracks and the Underwood barracks in the direct vicinity south of Großauheim. A smaller part of the Großauheim barracks was cleared in 1991, and several shops opened there in 2012. In 2008 the US Army completely cleared both barracks. There are still no plans to convert these areas.

Großauheim also has a share in the southern part of the New Argonner barracks , which extended over Wolfgang and Großauheim. Originally, a new sports center was to be built here, but this project had to be abandoned due to lack of money. It is now planned to build residential buildings on the open area. The problem with this project is not only the necessary noise protection due to the neighboring railway line, but also the fact that the strictly protected natterjack toad has settled on the site .
