location

The museum has been located in the former power station and bathhouse (built in 1906) at Pfortenwingert 4 since 1983. It is located near the town center in the vicinity of the old cemetery and can be reached on foot from Großauheim train station . The building was completely renovated by the end of 2011.

collection

The museum is managed by Beate Hofmann. The collection takes up an area of around 1300 m² and is divided into three areas:

Industrial history

The first part of this exhibition area is dedicated to the mechanization of agriculture. In a large hall, a steam-powered locomobile with a threshing machine, a steam tractor and a small tractor with an internal combustion engine from the company Josef Bautz, based in Großauheim in the 1950s, are shown. The machinery of the Förderverein Dampfmaschinenmuseum eV was brought in here. Subsequently, a small local history department shows the former leisure activities in Großauheim using large photos.

In the former machine hall, energy generation is reproduced with steam engines and generators. Afterwards, Hanau's industrial history is presented in the former syringe house to this day. The connection to the railway (1848) and the construction of the Hanau Main Harbor (1924) were important impulses for this . Photos illustrate the work of people in an increasingly industrialized world. Large photos and texts, but above all objects, traditional Hanau companies ( Heraeus , Dunlop , Evonik ) close the exhibition, including former companies such as the Marienhütte iron foundry and the Wolfgang powder factory .

August Gaul

The front area of the museum shows exhibits by probably the most famous Großauheimer, the sculptor August Gaul (1869–1921). Gaul was born in Großauheim and taught at the Hanau Drawing Academy . The redesigned department mainly shows early designs, including a cast of the large standing lioness and the original group of figures of the young bears (formerly at the Wertheim department store in Berlin ). Further works by Gaul are shown in the Hanau Historical Museum in Philippsruhe Castle .

August Peukert

August Peukert (1912–1986) was born in Großauheim and trained at the drawing academy with Richard Estler and Reinhold Ewald . A separate department was set up on the first floor of the museum with the support of the Heimat- und Geschichtsverein Großauheim eV as well as donations and loans from the Peukert and Eich families. It includes Peukert's early work, the post-war period and the landscapes of the 1950s, experimental monotypes and mixed media, as well as socially critical and free works from the late phase.

Others

The rear part of the building is used for special exhibitions. The museum has its own rooms for museum education. In the building there are also rooms of the Heimat- und Geschichtsverein Großauheim eV The Förderverein Dampfmaschinen-Museum eV is connected to the museum, it offers steam engine demonstrations on certain dates ( event day of the industrial culture Rhein-Main , “Dampftage”).
