Leopoldo Richter

Leopoldo Richter (* 14 February 1896 in Großauheim , Hanau , as Leopold Richter ; † 22. February 1984 in Bogotá ) was a German in Colombia resident potters , entomologist and a major artist of Colombia in the 20th century .

Life

During his childhood, Leopoldo Richter lived in the small town of Lahr . It was here that his great interest in plants and especially insects was aroused, as Lahr is located in the immediate vicinity of the Black Forest and the young Leopold Richter took many walks in the forest.

In 1914, when he was 18 years old, the First World War began . Like everyone else his age, he had to go to war. His left hand was badly injured during a battle (presumably the Battle of the Somme ). Because of his injury, he was sent back to Germany in 1916, where he had to work as a draftsman for the Junkers aircraft factory from 1917 to 1918 .

Between 1921 and 1924 he attended the Technical University of Baden in Karlsruhe . In 1932 he decided to leave Germany because of the “complicated political situation” and traveled to Brazil that same year . According to his own statements, he succeeded in doing all of this with the help of a contact in the Kolping Foundation , which also welcomed him in Brazil in the relatively newly founded colony of Porto Novo near Itapiranga .

In Brazil he was enchanted by the immense forests and the variety of animals and especially insects. In the forests of this new country he discovered his passion for the chirps and trained as an entomologist with the support of a Jesuit priest named Pio Bock. During his time in Brazil, he made many drawings of the country's insect fauna. Years later he wrote in his notes:

“I have spent twenty years of my life studying these insects (Membracidae), which fascinated me [...] I was very busy drawing and painting them so that they are not only scientifically accurate, but also artistically Point of view, are flawless so that I could learn from them myself, and to draw the attention of others to a hidden beauty that no one else would take. "

He moved to Colombia in 1935 and joined the Universidad Nacional de Colombia as a scientific researcher in 1939 . In the following years he published works about the humpback cliffs of Colombia, in which he drew with great detail and used a microscope as an aid to better recognize the shapes of the animals and to draw them later. He also collected insects in Colombia for scientific purposes. Many of the humpback hoppers that he has collected are exhibited in the Center for Natural History of the Zoological Institute and Museum of the University of Hamburg . Several species of humpback hoppers were named after Leopoldo Richter, as well as one genus (which, however, is no longer valid).

While touring the areas of the Amazon and the coast of Colombia, he fell in love with the culture of the indigenous population , which also strongly influenced his works in the following years until his death in 1984. Not only the indigenous people of Colombia had an influence on his work, he also visited other South American countries such as Ecuador .

From the mid-1950s he had several exhibitions, including in Switzerland , Colombia and the United States .

L. Richter died on February 22nd, 1984 in Bogotá at the age of 88.

criticism

"His craftsmanship and the variety of his techniques, deepened in his universal topic (the forest, the world, the life of the natives, the flora and the fauna) make Leopoldo Richter an individual artist, independent of time and fashion trends"
