history

At the end of May 1809, after the victories of the Tyroleans against the French troops during the coalition wars, Andreas Hofer entrusted Anton Wallner with the organization of national defense in the Salzburg Mountains, Pinzgau and Pongau . Johann Panzl also took over the leadership of the 2nd Saalfelden Rifle Company and became Wallner's sub-commander. After fighting in Salzburg, Wallner and Panzl returned to Matrei at the end of October 1809 to organize the resistance in East Tyrol. They took part in the fighting in the Iseltal, which led to the peace of Unterpeischlach . After the occupation of East Tyrol, Wallner and Panzl were sentenced to death in absentia. Wallner had already fled before, and Panzl was smuggled out of his hiding place. Instead of Wallner and Panzl, the hostages provided by the Matrei community, the butcher Johann Weber and the Sieberer Franz Obersamer, were executed on December 28, 1809.

monument

The Wallner Panzl memorial was erected on the church square in Matrei in 1909 to mark the 100th anniversary of the struggle for freedom and was consecrated on September 26, 1909. The mighty stone stele by the stonemason Lardscheider has a semicircular end and two relief niches separated by a column with a cube capital. The bronze reliefs were created by Virgil Rainer. They show Johann Panzl on the left (inscribed "JOHAN = PANZL / 1786/1862") and on the right Anton Wallner (inscribed "ANTON = WALLNER 1768/1810 / V.RAINER"). Below the bronze reliefs there is an inscription plate in memory of the executed hostages (inscribed "FRANZ OBERSAMER / 1783-1809 / JOHANN WEBER / 1778-1809")
