The Matrei cemetery in East Tyrol is a listed ( list entry ) cemetery in the municipality of Matrei in East Tyrol , Lienz district .

history

The Matrei cemetery was laid out to the west and south of the Matrei parish church , although early sources for the existence of the cemetery are missing. The unkempt condition of the cemetery was not mentioned in a document until 1615, and there is also a reference to an unconsecrated altar in the ossuary in this document . In earlier times, non-Catholics and "unbelievers" were buried north of the parish church on the so-called "Kalten Freithöftl".

Originally bordered by a wooden fence, a wall was built facing the church square in 1902. In 1975 the community took over the cemetery and expanded it in 1978. Between 1996 and 1997, the cemetery was again expanded to include 120 graves and 20 urn graves.

Buildings

War memorial

The old mortuary chapel is located in the northwest corner of the cemetery and was built by Thomas Mayr between 1785 and 1786 during the reconstruction of the parish church . At the beginning of the 20th century the chapel was surrounded by a pillar corridor, and between 1999 and 2001 it was redesigned again. The new cemetery chapel was laid out in 1978 during the expansion of the cemetery and built according to plans by Herbert Rottenspacher. It houses a colorful glass painting depicting the resurrection of Christ.

There is also a cemetery cross from the beginning of the 19th century, a tomb created by Virgil Rainer for his parents and a war memorial that is also listed and commemorates the victims of the two world wars. The war memorial was erected in 1934 on the western perimeter wall for the fallen and missing of the First World War and expanded in 1950 for the dead of the Second World War. The memorial consists of four copper plaques with the names of the victims flanked by two wall lanterns. The monument is crowned by a copper eagle by Arthur Sigmund.
