Karl Kihn (born May 28, 1854 in Michelbach ; † January 9, 1934 in Aschaffenburg ) was a German doctor and historian and local researcher. He is considered one of the pioneers in developing the Spessart as a cultural landscape.

Career

His cradle was in the Brückenmühle , the most traditional of the five mills in Michelbach. His father, Valentin Kihn , was not only the most important miller in the whole area, but a man who had recognized the economic and social needs of the people in the Spessart . In the 1870s, as a member of the Bavarian state parliament, he strongly advocated the development of the Spessart by improving traffic conditions. The Kahl – Schöllkrippen railway line owes its creation to him, the opening of which he witnessed.

After completing high school in Eichstätt, Karl studied medicine in Würzburg, Munich and Prague, where he was awarded a Dr. med. received his doctorate. From 1880 he was the first doctor to practice in Großauheim (medical council), later he settled in Aschaffenburg.

While still a student, he founded the Freigerichter Bund in 1876 , which he chaired from 1920 to 1925, the oldest hiking club in the Spessart. At his instigation, in 1913 all hiking clubs in the region were merged into the Spessart Association. There Kihn made a special contribution to tourism in the region. To develop the ridge, he initiated the creation of good hiking trails and their marking. In 1880 he laid the foundation stone for the Ludwigsturm on the Hahnenkamm, which was built under the patronage of the Bavarian King Ludwig II, and in 1886 wrote the first travel guide for the Freigericht . Later a travel guide (Greaves) for the Spessart was also created, after he had already done the basic work on the inventory of the natural monuments in the region. This earned him the nickname "Spessart Father" , a token of thanks and recognition that large parts of the population showed him .

In 1904 Kihn was a founding member of the Aschaffenburg History Association and its 1st chairman from 1904 to 1908 and again from 1916 to 1919. In 1906 he was a co-founder of the local history journal Spessart .

Karl Kihn was married to Hermine Kronenberger, mayor's daughter from Großauheim, who gave him six children, two of whom died early. One of his children was the later CSU member of the Bundestag, Karl Alfred Kihn .

Karl Kihn was buried in the old cemetery in Großauheim . After his death he bequeathed his private medical library to the Germanisches Nationalmuseum in Nuremberg.
