The August-Gaul-Schule (1916–1963: Tower School ) is a primary school in the Großauheim district of the city of Hanau . In the primary school, 180 pupils are taught by 14 teachers.

history

At the beginning of the 19th century, Großauheim experienced rapid population growth. Within 50 years the population quadrupled, new settlement areas emerged north of the Main-Spessart-Bahn and the majority of the population was of school age. This caused the place to build numerous new schools to cope with the rush of students.

The community of Großauheim sold the community forest to the German Empire, which set up a parade ground there. The community used the proceeds to build a new Catholic elementary school in the immediate vicinity of the train station . Construction began in 1914, and despite the war , construction was completed a year later. In 1916 the first class moved into the new tower school. In the era of National Socialism , the school was brought into line . After the war, many students from Hanau attended the tower school, as the schools in the city had been destroyed after the war.

When the Lindenau School was established in 1963 , the Tower School was renamed the August Gaul School in honor of August Gaul . At the same time it became a pure elementary school.

The striking school building with the tower clock and bell, which originally rang every 15 minutes, is shaped by the zeitgeist of the imperial era. It is a cultural monument according to the Hessian Monument Protection Act .

particularities

The August-Gaul-Schule is an all-day school that offers afternoon care until 5 p.m.

The first two grades are taught across grades, with the transition to grade 3 depending on the child's individual performance level and can thus take place earlier, but also later than in a normal primary school.

As part of the Computer-AG, the students of the August-Gaul-Schule create their own student homepage, which is publicly accessible.
