Alois Kottmann (born June 20, 1929 in Großauheim , Hessen ) is a German violinist , music teacher , patron and university teacher .

life and work

Alois Kottmann grew up in his family's home with two siblings as the son of a silversmith. His music-loving mother in particular did everything possible to have her three children trained in music. His music teacher at the High School (Gymnasium) in Hanau encouraged him to play the violin. After graduating from high school, Kottmann took violin lessons privately at the Hölscher house, where he was given special musical support through his friendship with Gert Hölscher (1930–2010). In this way he got to know the pianist Günter Ludwig early on . At the Frankfurt University of Music , Kottmann finally studied with Marie-Louise Graef-Mönch, Alma Moodie's assistant , and was trained after Carl Flesch . He had taken lessons from her years before graduating from high school.

Kottmann's violin playing was awarded a prize at the university competition in Hamburg. After his concert exam he was employed as a violin teacher at the Odenwald School . From 1958 Kottmann worked as a university professor at the renowned Hoch'schen Konservatorium in Frankfurt am Main. Later he was also active as a lecturer at the Frankfurt University of Music , at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main and at the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz . From 1977 to 1979 he was acting head of Dr. Hoch's Conservatory.

Kottmann studied mainly with Walther Davisson , Kurt Hessenberg , Gustav Lenzewski , August Leopolder and Helmut Walcha . There were also encounters with the von Bethmann family , Anton Biersack , Reinhold Finkbeiner , Erich Flinsch , Karl Freitag , Karlheinz Ludwig Funk , Ludwig Hoelscher , Richard Rudolf Klein , Dieter Lindemann, Otmar Mácha , Thomas Magyar , Yehudi Menuhin , Ginette Neveu , Elly Ney , Váša Příhoda , Max Rostal , Gerhard Taschner , Rüdiger Volhard , Bruno Vondenhoff and Friedrich Zipp .

Music is not a means of self-expression, but a medium of communication between people. "

- Prof. hc Alois Kottmann

Kottmann entered into artistic partnerships with Karl Freitag, Agnes Giebel , Peter-Lukas Graf , Ingo Goritzki , Rainer Hoffmann , Alois Ickstadt , Maria Jäger-Jung , Marietta Krutisch , Günter Ludwig, Albert Mangelsdorff , Gisela Sott and Heinz Teuchert .

Alois Kottmann was committed, among other things, to the continued existence of the Hoch Conservatory, which has been questioned several times, for the regional promotion of musical culture in the Rhine-Main area , the promotion of international young talent, the works of Frankfurt composers and the violin tradition established in the Main metropolis Carl Flesch, for a high level of humanity and a lively international artistic and social exchange. This comprehensive commitment has continued almost unabated to this day.
