Ernst Gerold Schramm (born July 8, 1938 in Steinheim am Main ; † June 8, 2004 in Mainz ) was a German opera singer (baritone) and singing teacher.

Life

Schramm learned to play the piano as a child and also sang solo parts in his uncle's renowned choir. He later became active not only as a pianist but also as a choir conductor. At the Frankfurt University of Music he was taught by Ernst Arnold, Martin Gründler and Bruno Vondenhoff , head of the opera class, among others . In 1965 he won the International Singing Competition in Geneva and then had his first appearance at the Wiener Musikverein with the German Requiem by Johannes Brahms under the direction of Wolfgang Sawallisch. This was followed by Bach's St. Matthew and St. John Passions under Karl Richter , under whom he also sang the bass parts on major tours through South America, Japan, etc. In 1966 he made his stage debut at the State Theater in Hanover as Marullo in Giuseppe Verdi's Rigoletto. He was also able to achieve great success at the Frankfurt Opera , where he was also teaching at the music academy. He sang at the Deutsche Oper Berlin , the Wuppertal Opera House , the Salzburg Festival , the Bregenz Festival and the Vienna Volksoper . At the Berlin University of the Arts , he not only worked as a lecturer, but also as managing director. After retiring in 2004, he planned to perform together with his long-time partner at the piano, Alois Ickstadt . However, he collapsed during rehearsals and the diagnosis revealed a very advanced disease from which he died only a few months later.
