Walther Davisson (born December 15, 1885 in Frankfurt am Main ; † July 18, 1973 in Bad Homburg vor der Höhe ) was a German violinist and conductor .

Life

Davisson attended the Wöhler Realgymnasium in Frankfurt am Main. After graduating from high school, he studied violin from 1900 to 1906 with Adolf Rebner at the Dr. Hoch's Conservatory . From 1906 to 1913 he was a secondary in his quartet.

From 1908 to 1918 he taught violin at the Hoch Conservatory. He then led a violin class at the Leipzig Conservatory , where he became deputy director in 1922. From 1932 to 1942 he was its rector . From 1947 to 1948 he taught at the State University for Theater and Music in Halle . From 1950 to 1954 Davisson was Artistic Director of the Frankfurt University of Music and the Conservatory. His students included u. a. Gerhard Bosse , Saschko Gawriloff , Georg Hanstedt , Fritz Kirmse , Arnold Matz and Klaus Tennstedt .

Walther Davisson was also the editor of violin literature. Among other things, he edited Bach's sonatas and partitas for solo violin .

Davisson made several recordings as a conductor for the US label VOX in the 1950s, accompanying soloists such as Joseph Schuster, Bronisław Gimpel and Friedrich Wührer . These recordings were distributed in Germany by the European Phonoklub.
