Robert Ehrlich

Robert Ehrlich (* 1965 in Belfast ) is a Northern Irish recorder player and university professor. From October 2015 to 2019 he was rector of the "Hanns Eisler" University of Music in Berlin . Before that, from 2006 to 2015 he was rector of the "Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy" University of Music and Theater in Leipzig .

Life

Ehrlich was born in Belfast. He first studied musicology at King's College Cambridge . In 1990 he obtained a master's degree in ethnomusicology ( M.Phil. ). He then studied with Walter van Hauwe specialist recorder at the Sweelinck Conservatory in Amsterdam .

He gives concerts worldwide as a soloist and in an ensemble, a. a. with the Academy of Ancient Music , the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig and the English Concert . His CD recordings include recordings of the Brandenburg Concerts by JS Bach in three different pitches with Riccardo Chailly (a '= 443 Hz), Trevor Pinnock (a' = 415 Hz) and Richard Egarr (a '= 392 Hz).

From 1990 to 1993 taught Ehrlich in teaching at the University of Music Karlsruhe . He was also a visiting professor at the University of Southampton . Since 1993 he has been professor of recorder at the Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy University of Music and Theater in Leipzig and since 1998 visiting professor at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London. In 2006 Ehrlich was elected rector of the Leipzig University of Music, where he was re-elected by the Extended Senate in 2010 with a large majority for a second term.

In 2015, he was elected Rector by the Extended Academic Senate of the Hanns Eisler University of Music in Berlin. On October 1, 2019, Sarah Wedl-Wilson succeeded him .
